Fun fact, The Royal Canadian Mint makes the most pure gold in the world, so counterfeiters almost always try to fake them

You forget to mention the 4th method, that you use used but forget to mention it in your list; Buy a very expensive machine that no one owns to determine the bars chemical makeup. ✅

For those of you who don't know about the 'gold checking machine'. It is called Surface enhanced raman spectroscopy (SERS). It shines a laser on to the material and measures the wavelength shift of the reflected light. The shift is unique to each material, hence acts as the signature.

MILLIONS and MILLIONS of these Chinese bars and coins are out there. Especially in "Graded" packaging, PAMP Suisse packaged bars, etc etc. They are Gold plated Tungsten. They can be extremely hard to detect

yeah I actually bought a 'gold bar' that was on sale for cheap, and yes it was listed as a fake. Took it in to find out what it was made of and what impurities were in it. After some extensive testing the bar was gold coated copper with 3% platinum. Not as valuable as pure gold but I was given a much better offer for it than I paid for it.

and if you want to know... the local college got themselves a mass spectrometer and was dying to test it out on metals.

seen someone test the gold by heating it up with a torch. Gold doesn't leave black residue after being heated up.

I think recognizing when something has been stamped and then plated is pretty easy.

Pure gold can also be determined by finding the density of the metal bar in question and measuring its weight in and out of water to ensure no air is inside inflating apparent volume.

The price of a gold bar varies between countries. Example - 1 gram of gold costs about 59$ in the USA, but in the country where i live, if we convert our currency to USD, a gram of gold costs about 27$.

There's another method which you won't need a machine for:

Check the density by filling a measuring cup till 50ml (for example) and dunk the gold in, then you do the result minus 50 ml, the result will be the volume of the bar in cm³. Then you weigh the gold bar (in grams for the sake of this example).
Then you do mass divided by volume and if its around 19, 3g/cm³ then it's real.
