Great lesson, Ricky. Playing the pentatonic scales using the caged system, for years without really knowing what I was doing, I have found it invaluable for learning triads.

You're unlocking the guitar for me and bringing renewed enjoyment to my playing.

Thank you very much for the 'start of lesson indicator' !
I am all-in on your 'coloring system' - I have always used color hilites to emphasize important features of text/diagrams/ideas. Staying consistent with the color choices is key. Great job bud.

Nice lesson, Rick! So, one can looked at CAGED as the open major chord shapes of C, A, G, E, D. But more simply, these are also just octave shapes that link up the neck.

There are CAGED arpeggios, some of which may have tricky fingerings, so be aware there are other arpeggio shapes as well.

In each of the CAGED shapes, you do have a "box" major scale and its modes. But there are also 3-note-per-string scales as well that bridge between more than one CAGED shape.

So CAGED is just one way of navigation, but a very good one that should not be overlooked.

*** An interesting thing I discovered not long ago is that CAGED does not always line up perfectly up the neck with matching shape and chord names. Let me explain:

For example, you play a 1-4-5 progression in the key of C. Your chords are C-F-G. Now, let's say you play this starting on the 8th fret, and stay in the same area. What shape do you call your C chord there? The E shape. Your next chord would be the A shape to play the F chord, and the next chord would be the B shape to play the G chord.

This is because E-A-B is a 1-4-5, right?

But wait a minute, I thought it was CAGED, and not BAGED! Ah, but listen - all of the CAGED shapes has an open string EXCEPT for the C shape. Move the C shape back a fret, and voila, you now have an open B string.

Why the need for this adjustment sometimes? Simple, it's the way the guitar is tuned with that major 3rd interval from the G string to the B string.

Just an anomaly you need to be aware of with the CAGED (or BAGED) shapes.

This is good stuff. I’m going to have to watch more than once. One question. The more videos I watch on CAGED, the dumber I feel. Every video references how the scales fit within the various chord shapes but I’m completely lost on that. What am I not seeing? Must be something super obvious and remedial because every video references this but I don’t think I’ve ever heard it explained what shapes fit within/over certain chord shapes. I’m sure I’m making it way harder than it is.

I can believe that. I went to a concert in Perth W.A. Joe Pass with Oscar Peterson. Five stars!

Trying to understand how the A chord you make after C is an A.
I just ordered your book, maybe it will help me more.
