Who are the Tejanos? The Tejanos are the descendants of the original Spanish and Mexican settlers of Texas towns such as Laredo, San Antonio, Goliad and El Paso. Today they are greatly outnumbered by more recent Mexican immigrants, although the Tejanos have preserved some of their unique culture such as the Tejano style of music which is common in much of Southern, Central and West Texas today. The Tejanos faced several difficulties during their centuries-long history in the region including raids by the Apache and Comanche as well as various expulsions and conflict with the Anglo-American settlers. There may be as many as half a million or more of their descendants in Texas today although their identity has slowly been eroded away as they assimilate into the wider society. Thanks for watching.

I actually worked with a Tejano.
It had never came to me, that some of the original Hispanic population of Texas kept living there even after annexation, because I always thought that the Hispanic population in Texas were just the ones that moved much later on.

Interestingly enough, many Tejanos have Canarian ancestry! Many settled in and around San Antonio.

Masaman I'm really digging your shorts. You have some of the best most well researched content out there, but sometimes I can't do the full length vide, I always feel like I should be taking notes or something. The shorts are perfect when I don't have the time

Your mentioning of Goliad made me smile! I had a Great Great Great Grandfather born there around 1785. I believe the next couple of generations (my grandfather included) were also born there.

Wait, I thought we weren't allowed to talk about Texas before Stephen F Austin, this is dangerous information!! What's next? Talk about the Seguin family and the founding of Nuevo Santander??

I can trace a Spanish ancestor back to Laredo. So its safe to say i have tejano ancestry. Though its really just branches. My main branch comes from Spain through my forefathers.
