CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Patch (Robin Williams) talks with the distracted Dr. Prack (Harry Groener) who never meets his eyes and doesn't hear a word Patch says.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
The fact-based story of an unconventional physician who attempted to heal patients with laughter, based on his own book and mixing equal doses of scatological humor and pathos. Robin Williams stars as Hunter Adams, a troubled young man who commits himself to a mental institution in the late 1960s. His experiences there convince Adams to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is appalled at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their caregivers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Adams clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. Although his efforts seem to work wonders and the hospital nursing staff is grateful for the levity Adams provides, his methods alienate his uptight roommate Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as well as the staff and faculty of his school. Adams perseveres, however, even starting his own low-cost rural clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, and wooing a pretty fellow student, Carin (Monica Potter). Tragedy strikes, and Adams' career is put in jeopardy, forcing him to defend his style and philosophy before a board of jurists determined to bar him from practicing medicine. Patch Adams (1998) was produced by former M*A*S*H (1972-83) star Mike Farrell, who met the real-life Adams when the offbeat doctor served as an advisor to the actor's popular TV series.

You can tell that Robin Williams is sublimating genuine, palpable pain through his performances.

This scene began to define Patch's destiny. During that session with Dr. Prack the man wasn't even looking his patient in the eye when speaking to him or even listening to the discusssion. That plus helping Rudy with his problem made Patch's decision to become a doctor a reality.

"the biggest communication problem is that too many listen to reply, rather than listen to understand." 💛 i hope you are resting in peace robin. i wish you knew how many of us would have listened to you.

I think the coffee signifies how the doctor just dumps things into his patients until they seem right, and then he moves the cup to the other side of the table after he approves of its taste representing how after he's satisfied, he moves them away and continues his work.

Well I'm only a kid analyzing this I could be wrong, it could just be to distract us from what patch is saying like how the doctor is distracted

The sad thing is that most doctors don't listen. Most have the five minute rule. They read the notes from the nurses. They look at you while asking the same thing as the nurses. Then they diagnose you before you even finish telling them about your systoms.

Even though he was telling a sad story I didn't want to laugh but I did when he said in quote "I wished I could light my own farts and fly to the moon... At least Uranus. But if I couldn't do that I would use my penis as a pogo stick that might be a ways of me getting around" 😂😂😂😂😂😂 lol I'm sorry its so funny! Rip robin you always made me laugh

The reason this clip is so poignant, is because there's a lot of reality behind this sequence. I never believed in psychiatry, but was in a situation where I reluctantly went to see one. Before I'd even gotten past the first sentence, he was writing out prescriptions for anti-depressants. After I'd finished. He told me of his intentions and reasons. I protested "but I'm not depressed!" and he replied "oh yes you are"

This scene is a perfect example of how NOT to be a good counsellor and how NOT to support someone.

I’m glad things have for the most part changed, but finding a good counsellor is like finding a good hairdresser or pair of shoes... you need to try a few out to find one that fits

Sadly, I've actually worked with a few Doctors that are a spitting image of that guy. =/

I know there are plenty of people who don't really listen, but this particular case is almost impossible from someone just bored with a conversation. "Penis" is going to be one of those hot words we pick out of noise even if we're not paying attention. You have to avoid using words like that if you're going to test if someone's listening. He could have said something like, "My uncle always loved children. He said they went well with ranch dressing, and I have to agree."

Sounds like every therapist I’ve ever had.
I’ve been in therapy off and on for 18 years…
I really don’t like talking to doctors at all and I’m not that old. Never got that moment when you make a truly mind blowing discovery about yourself that was so frequently advertised to us as kids. And it seems therapy only pitted me against everyone more than if I had just accepted some responsibility for my situation. And accepting what is and isn’t what I can change, convinced that behind every cruelty was intentional mistreatment, and after learning this phrase “never equate willful cruelty or negligence, with something that can be easily be explained by a lack of knowledge or stupidity, ” I found that I was able to weed out the ones who didn’t care to learn, best helped me with judging character.
