HOW TO INSTALL LINUX MINT 19

PREPARATION

1. Create bootable DVD or USB media.

* You can burn a bootable DVD in Windows 7 and up simply by inserting a blank DVD and then double clicking the ISO file.

2. Boot Linux Mint 18.

* You will have to turn off Secure Boot in your computer's BIOS setting to be able to boot from a DVD or USB drive.
* Once you get Linux Mint 19 booted, take time to play around and ensure that all of you hardware is working properly.
* Check to see if you will need any proprietary drives for your system.
* Take some time to read through the Linux Mint User's Guide to familiarize your self with the system.

3. Backup ALL Data You Wish To Keep!

* Do NOT use commercial backup software or the built in Windows backup utility. Linux Mint MUST be able to read the files you create.
* Backups MUST be stored on a USB drive or other removable media.
* It is OK to store backup data in a Zip file. Linux Mint can open them with Archive Manager.

INSTALLATION

WARNING! Proceed at your own risk. Installing Linux Mint will wipe out your current Windows installation and all data you have stored on the computer. There is no way to “un-install” Linux Mint!
* It is a good idea to have another computer, smartphone or tablet available so you can have access to the Internet in case you need to look something up.
* Turn off Secure Boot in your computer's BIOS settings.
* Hook computer to the Internet with an Ethernet cable if drivers will be needed to use Wi-Fi.
* Boot Linux Mint
* Launch Linux Mint's installer and follow the directions.
* Restart the computer. You are now Running Linux Mint!

POST-INSTALLATION SETUP

Follow the “First Steps” outlined in the Weclome Screen:
* Setup Timeshift
* Change to local mirrors
* Install ALL updates!
* Check for and install drivers.
* Restart the computer.

Tweaks:
* Open GNOME Disks and enable Write Cache for all internal drives.
* Enable recommended packages in Synaptic Package Manager
* Configure the Desktop and choose startup applications.
* Restart and have fun!

Linux Mint is now fully installed and ready to use.

I am a 20 years windows user and from time to time I install Linux to play with but never really decided to make the shift. I have mint in a virtual machine about a year now and I think the time has come. Mint is now up to my expectations.... You earned a sub from this video and I'll stay close to your channel. Keep it up...

Good job Joe! I removed Vista from this laptop and now my son-in-law is a Linux user. One of the BEST "how to" videos on YouTube.

I recently switched to Linux Mint 18.3 as my main (and only) OS and though it has been a struggle to learn my way around, but I'm feeling far more comfortable with it than I did a month ago and I'm working hard to learn new things every day.

Your channel inspires me to stick with it. What I have learned from this whole experience is that open source/free software is truly the way to go. For every single software I used on Windows (with the exception of one), I have found an open source replacement that works for me. I don't see myself looking back.

Thank you for videos like these! They're quite helpful.

Used this video to load Mint 20 on an old Aspire 3 with Windows 10. Once I managed to get the machine booted with Linux (which didn't have a secure boot key or UEFI in the BIOS settings). Initially the DVD boot disc didn't want to work, therefore loaded the boot software to a USB, rebooted, walked away, had lunch and after that everything was perfect. A really great way to start with Linux. Thanks

OMG I just bought a new (very low end) laptop (Intel Celeron N4000, 4gb Ram, 500gb HDD). I got it solely to browse online, watch youtube and open emails. It was collapsing under windows, it was loud and slow just running microsoft edge. I've been meaning to try out linux and this was the perfect opportunity. Best decision of my life! Now it's quiet as a mouse and runs youtube no problem (seriously, its the least it can do, right?), NO THANKS TO WINDOWS! Thanks so much for putting this video together, I watched other installation videos but all of them just stopped once it was installed, and only you (that I've seen) cared to explain the recommended first steps, so thank! =D

I followed your instructions and links and installed Linux 19.3 64 bit today without ANY problems. I had tried to use Rufus following other instructions (not yours) and the installation failed. I used LinuxLive USB (the directions are perfect and detailed - which is exactly what I needed). Again it worked perfectly, thank you again!

Thanks Joe. I'm glad there are individuals like yourself that enjoy tinkering with Linux and like teaching what they have learned to help others who don't especially like to tinker with Linux but still need to understand it.

OMG just got LM19 up and running! I have done other Ubuntu installs on a desktop PC this is my 1st laptop (dualboot with 2 ssds) and it was challenging b/c of my wifi (realtek) I just installed a kernel update and BOOM wifi! I'm ready to go! Thanks for you informative videos. If you have never install Linux before listen to Joe and start with a simple, 2nd PC for the 1st install.

Installing Mint on my IdeaPad from 2015. Working great via DVD boot thus far. I only ever used Linux Backtrack back in 2011 because a friend was introducing me to Linux. He gave me none of this guidance and I ended up bricking a Vaio and giving up on Linux until now. Thanks for the video!

Thanks a Million Joe. I used your video to change my useless Windows based HP laptop into a nice and fast Linus Mink machine. Your video was excellent. Nice clear step by step with explanations. I am very impressed with the ease of installation and the MASSIVE improvement in the laptop speed and simplicity. I am glad I did it.

I love watching these videos. Even though I've installed different distros of Linux dozens of times, I always can potentially learn something new by watching installation vids. Like the thing with the Disks application! I learned about that today! Super cool chill vid, thanks for the info!

Once again, great vid. Youtube is full of videos for new users that have the same problem that you avoid, the terminal. This is a very good example that you don't need it if you don't want to. Thanks for this.
