Nel Noddings is the internationally-acclaimed pioneer of the effort to make caring a fundamental aim in education. Caring in all its myriad forms. Caring about ourselves, other human beings, our natural and man-made world, our communities, the world of ideas and culture, and even the survival of our democracy. A former math teacher and education professor at Stanford and Columbia, Nel is a noted philosopher who lectures widely on her unique “theory of care.” Claudia and I caught up with Nel in her lovely seaside home in charming Ocean Grove, NJ. Nel offers “advice from the porch” to our new Secretary of Education, and a peek at her beautiful garden: evidence that her ideas about caring really do work!
