16 Things You Missed In The Village (2004)

Did you notice these hidden connections to other Shyamalan movies like Unbreakable, Split and After Earth?

I believe this is the 100th episode of Things You Missed. One of my all time favorite horror movies is The Village. The 2004 film takes us to an isolated community in the woods who has withdrawn from the rest of society. Leaving the village is forbidden because of the dangerous monsters, Those We Do Not Speak Of, that roam the woods.

But when Ivy's fiance Lucius requires medical attention, she must make the trip to a nearby town to get supplies.

The film is brilliantly crafted by director M Night Shyamalan, which means there are plenty of Things You Missed to take note of, from clues about the mind-blowing twist, to connections and easter eggs relating to other Shyamalan movies, hidden cameo appearances, inspirations from urban legends and religious iconography, and more!

About The Village
Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan assembles an all-star cast, including Joaquin Phoenix and Sigourney Weaver, Adrien Brody, William Hurt and Bryce Dallas Howard, to bring the thrilling tale of an isolated village confronting the astonishing truth that lies just outside its borders. At first glance, this village seems picture perfect, but this close-knit community lives with the frightening knowledge that creatures reside in the surrounding woods. The evil and foreboding force is so unnerving that none dare venture beyond the borders of the village and into the woods. But when curious, headstrong Lucius Hunt plans to step beyond the boundaries of the town and into the unknown, his bold move threatens to forever change the future of the village.

I absolutely love this movie and don't understand why it isn't very popular. I never saw the ending Twist coming. Glad you're covering it!

I was always under the impression that the reason red was so feared is because it's the color of blood and therefore violent acts, so to keep people from shedding blood it became the color associated with the monsters

I'm legally blind without my glasses and pretty blind with them, and I just have to say Bryce Dallas Howard does a wonderful job at portraying what it is actually like. The uncertainty mental strength you get from adapting to your sight as is.

Saw this in the theatre and as she crawled over the wall, the film abruptly ended and the house lights came on. I was blown away at such a sharp ending only to find out the film reel caught fire and we were given vouchers to return later.

I thought it was a good movie but it had a very scoobie doo feel for me.

The elders dressed up as monsters to scare the people and would have gotten away with it if it werent for those darn kids.

I wish I could rewatch this movie without knowledge of how it ends. It's such a huge shock and I wish I could experience that feeling again.

I was 11 when I watched this move with my mom on tv in '05.

I remember seeing this my senior year with a group of friends. Everyone else thought it was bad and "not scary", I was already exexploring movies other than the mainstream ones we were given at the time like Indies and foreign films so I was only one that was able to appreciate this movie and I still do

Thank you for this. I LOVE this movie and those around me just don't get it. My absolute favorite scene is when Ivy is waiting for Lucius as the monsters are attacking. It is so beautiful.

Enjoying the videos. But in this one, one thing YOU missed is that the color red they are trying to hide is more directly tied to blood itself rather than the berries. Remember that every “founder” of the village had a tragic experience in which either a family member was killed or died.

There are few people I've seen who actually like this film, but I really enjoyed the twist. I like seeing your perspective. 😊
