On another note… as a white blonde girl I also wasn’t picked by the guys in high school lol. My husband doesn’t believe I wasn’t “popular.” But I was waaaayyy shy when I was younger. So I think how you interact in your peer group when you’re younger also plays a role, not just what you look like. We all go through social growing pains when we’re young.

I hope the guy that eventually wins her over realises what a keeper she is. She’s obviously intelligent with a deep level of self awareness, her vulnerability is so brave, and her honesty’s disarming. When she spoke about her Mom I teared up too, (thinking about my late Mom.) Most cases when people say “it’s not me, it’s them, ” it’s not true…in this case- it’s them.. Can relate to the validation from white guys part. When you grow up as a minority surrounded by a Eurocentric standard of beauty, you spend a lot of time as adults trying to attain or become what you never had. Now after being aware of it, I see how much meaning I put upon attention from Caucasian men, and after getting it, realized not all of them are made equal, and that outer appearance (obviously) has little to do with whether they’re good in a relationship or makes me happy. Great interview, appreciate her sharing some very vulnerable things.
