She's right tho... You still need to use sunscreen even during winter.

I am a dark skinned Indian and my relatives always wanted me to have fairer skin growing up. They would criticise the way my skin colour is and compare me to my cousins who were fairer. Gave me insane self-esteem issues but I'm doing better now. I have distanced myself from those people and my mental health has definitely improved.

I’m an Arabic guy, I didn’t know sunscreen existed until I learned English.

Remember guys, it's not about the light of the sun, it's about the UV rays

I’m half Korean and this topic has been addressed and explained. It’s a beauty standard that ties into old Korean Dynasties where the wealthy people stayed indoors while the lower class people worked outside in the sun. It’s generations of conditional thinking that lighter is better. This is common throughout most of Asia, even the Middle East and Africa.

I'd like to hear the response to that question from a Korean.

Why dont you interview a Korean person and give them a chance to speak for themselves.

I also heard about this reason behind why Asians prefer pale skin..."There is a deeply rooted cultural norm involved with these debates over skin color and beauty. In many societies, and especially in Asia, dark skin has long been associated with working in the fields and, therefore, rural poverty. On the other hand, pale skin is associated with living a more comfortable, cosmopolitan life indoors, out of the sun. Skin color is thus a sign of social class."

As an south East Asian, we don’t really go under sun because we will turn really dark brown instead of reddish 😂 it’s sooo hard to get our usual skin tone back

Dude, the amount of "beauty products" and "whitening products" sold here in South East Asia is astounding. Local online shops specifically has a section for only those items. 😂

Not every Korean girl is like that. It’s all depends on person. I am Korean and I love tanned skin. Generalisation is not needed.

I was always super pale and I felt kind of bad for it. Then I got int K-pop and suddenly found out that’s the beauty standard in Korea. That made me realize the first time, that Beaty standards don’t matter. The same Beaty standard can be in another country considered ugly. So let’s just forget those standards and be the best versions of ourselves.

I really like the interviewer. He looks like he's genuinely listening to the other person and not just trying to get a reaction. His questions are thoughtful and well put. Such sincerity is rare especially on short format content.

If I told my Indian grandmother that I wanted pale skin, she’d slap me 😂

Edit: Idk why there’s debate in the comments whether I’m Indian or not but I am - South Indian to be specific soo….yeah :) btw thanks for the likes and not to be that person but…. MOMMMY IM

This is crazy. I’m first generation American Brazilian living in South Florida and I’m a white Brazilian and I got picked on all my life for being a white Latina living in a sunny state. They would tell me I wasn’t really Brazilian or why am I so pale when I could go outside and I’ll get darker. The more tan you are, the better you look in beauty standards. So its crazy how in other countries, it’s the complete opposite.

It's not just a Korean thing. It reaches into Nepal and other countries close by. When I was in Nepal there were billboards EVERWHERE for skin whitening cream.
