I'm Taiwanese, our majority don't consider ourselves Chinese, just a bit like Ukrainians don't think they're Russians; or just like South Koreans don't think they are part of North Korea, even though both Koreas have the same word “Korea” in their country-names, but international also recognize both Koreas as 2 countries. Whether or not the Communist Party falls, Taiwan will not be part of China if by referendum peacefully. This is the identity-trend of the people here. In order to avoid misunderstanding, our society has not used the “Republic of China” for a long long time, we only use “Taiwan” in our daily life. The younger generation even dislikes any china/ese affixes very much.
Only about 2% of Taiwanese identified ourselves as Chinese solely.
Compared as follows: (2022)
“Taiwanese”: 63% (long-term increasing)
“Both”: 30% (long-term decreasing)
“Chinese”: 2% (long-term decreasing)
Reference. from the long-term surveys, ”Identity of Taiwanese/Chinese”(1992-2022-), Election Study Center, NCCU University.

It’s not about international laws, it’s dead anyway. It’s about standing up to aggressive, expansionist dictatorships. China and russia, specifically. And for THAT reason, I support Ukraine and Taiwan 🇺🇦🇹🇼

Denys, I live in Taiwan. This country has been ruled by the Chinese Nationalist Party from 1945-2000.
In 1996, Taiwan became a democracy.
In 2000-2008 & 2016-Now, the country has been ruled by a Taiwan Nationalist Party.
In 2005, Taiwan tried to change its name to Taiwan to officially join the UN, however China passed the anti-succession law which prevents Taiwan from officially changing its name. Basically it means war.
Taiwan has been bullied. The people here today and now believe to be Taiwanese and not Chinese.
They are tired of both China and the USA.
They even put the words Taiwan on their passport. The current president said that we don’t need to declare independence because we are already independent.
In American’s Taiwan Relations ACT law, America will not defend Taiwan if it provokes China into war. So if Taiwan changes its name and China uses their anti-succession law, then America won’t help defend Taiwan.

That’s why it is still called Repulic of China!!!

The people here are Taiwanese. That’s the history you need to learn. This is not China, nor do the people here wish to rule communist China one day.

All of those Chinese nationalists are dead now.

Here is the present situation.

China wants Taiwan back
America wants to keep the status quo
Taiwan wants the world to recognize them as Taiwan, however, keeping the status quo is better than war.

The problem with Taiwan has to do with the KMT party (Chinese Nationalist Party) that ruled Taiwan from 1945-2000.

Since 2000, Taiwan has been trying very hard to be Taiwan and not China.

[Edited to add TLDR]

I'm Taiwanese, and I think many are misunderstanding the point Denys is making here.

Imagine if Russia dropped bombs on Washington DC and the entire U.S. government went into a bunker to be safe. Everyone's yelling "Declare that bunker a new country! And make yourselves the government of that bunker! Gooo democracy!". If the U.S. government declares their bunker a new country that they now govern, guess what, that means they're no longer the government of the land formerly knows as "The United States of America".

Both the island of Taiwan and China were ruled under the Qing Dynasty from before 1700 to 1895, aka "China". Then Japan took over the island and turned it into a Japanese colony, WW2 happened, and when the CCP over-ran mainland China after WW2 (civil war) the original government of China fled to the island of Taiwan.

The CCP and the original government of China BOTH agree that:

[Mainland China] + [Island of Taiwan] = [All China]

The real dispute is who is the real government of "All China".
The CCP claims itself to be the legitimate government, the government in Taiwan claims itself to be the legitimate government.

The point he's making is the government in Taiwan is not just "an independent government of Taiwan", but it is *the original PRE-CCP* government of the land we know as "China". So, if the CCP collapses in the future, the "original government of China that is currently in Taiwan" can simply return to mainland China and govern the land/country it was forced to leave. Why? Because they're simply returning to their original land.

BUT, if the "original government of China" simply declares "we're the government of this island, and this island is a completely different country", then they will have relinquished any hope of returning the "pre-CCP original government of China" back to China, because it will be the same *legally* as one independent nation and government invading and conquering a completely different country.

So please understand, Denys is not pissing on Taiwan's independence.

TLDR;
Don't look at Taiwan as a country, but as the temporary bunker of the pre-CCP government of China.
The original homeowners fled the main house into the garage to avoid murderous communist squatters that are now squatting in the main house.
And now, those squatters want to take the garage too.
So, please stop asking the original homeowners to split the property into two.

Denys, if you look up the history of Taiwan/Formosa, you will find that it was a country/region that was independent from China for most of its history. It was only in 1683 that the Qing/Manchu Dynasty conquered it. Then in 1895 the Japanese took control of it, and later Nationalist China. Thus, it has just as much right to claim it is a separate nation unto itself as Poland and Ukraine. Communist China has no claim over it, any more than Russia has a claim over Ukraine. Indeed, both are nations facing imperialistic dictators. The only reason that PR China wants to conquer it is because of revisionist history and a desire to stamp out the last remnants of the Kuomintang, the Nationalist Chinese Government. So Xi's desire to have China absorb Taiwan has as much validity as Putin's desire to annex Ukraine. If the people of Taiwan want to remain an independent country, why doesn't China just let them? It's no skin off Xi's nose if they remain independent.

Denys As someone who has visited Taiwan and has Taiwanese friends, l feel it's best you keep your opinions to the subjects directly related to the terrible situation in Ukraine. We all support you and Taiwanese are fighting in Ukraine, I don't know of any Chinese fighting for or supporting Ukraine.

If Taiwan 🇹🇼 wants to be an independent nation, it should be supported by us all.
The "one China policy" is merely a diplomatic stance to avoid conflict with Communist mainland China.

A very complex situation regarding Taiwan having lost the civil war against the communists . Taiwan ROC was recognised by the UN as a nation up until 1971 when it lost its seat to the Communist Bandits ( a name given to the CCP on its creation 100 years ago - the same year marijuana was banned in the UK) ) . Still recognised by 13 countries, Taiwan is itself described by the remaining members as a country of the gateway to China and maintains strong ties to the point of creating the economic boom in Taiwan and its present status as an independent trading nation from mainland China . Its not whether one recognises Taiwan as a country, its whether one recognises the UN as an organisation in the interests of its members and clearly, as in Russia v Ukraine under international law, the UN has taken very little action in declaring Russia a rogue terrorist nation and intervening in this unlawful genocidal war as the UN did in the Balkans, most African nations most famously Somalia etc. This brings the UN and its authority under deep scrutiny where any decision made by its members is lawful or not .
Accepting Communist China because its a nuclear armed nation with a massive army that threatens peace and security of the world over ROC is a questionable act in itself . Given that precedence, at what stage in this Russia v Ukraine war will the UN accept Ukraine as Russian territory ? Certainly, its looking like Ukraine will lose the Donbas region to Russia and the Crimea, being realistic .
Its no different than the ROC losing the war against the Communist Bandits if the UN recognises any part of Ukraine or Ukraine as a whole as Russian territory if overwhelmed by Russia . Despite clear evidence of war crimes committed by Russia what action has the UN really taken ? None ! Why do you think puppets and sham referendums are taking place in the occupied territories ? This gives Russia, as in the Crimea, the right of possession and possession, my friend, is, as they say " is 9/10ths of the Law ".
Damnit, I'm 64 and have a number of physical disabilities and I am gutted that I cannot join the people of Ukraine on the frontline or at least train them to shoot all types of small arms in combat and teach field craft to help Ukrainians fight and survive this war and win, as it must do, but I cannot . And we Brits support Ukraine without question, as Ukraine has made significant inroads in becoming a decent and less corrupt nation and burgeoning democracy .
The UK people will never recognise Ukraine as part of Russia simply because of the actions of a rogue nation and neither should we not recognise Taiwan and its democracy as an independent nation .

Hi Denys, greetings from Czech Republic. I've been watching the so far great videos of yours daily from early spring with fingers crossed for Ukraine to win and supporting Ukraine with donations for humanitarian aid. And I will keep supporting Ukraine. But please stay humble and with feet on the ground as you used to be, do not become overwhelmed by the success of your channel. World is not just international law. The 23 million Taiwan people have right to live their lives in a country they want to live in. That is the same value you are fighting for. Do not deny it to others, otherwise it would become hard for us to support your channel.

Sorry Denys you're wrong here. I support Ukraine and any country that faces aggression from a foreign power. My own country is still occupied by a foreign aggressor. I've been living in Taiwan for 8 years, and it is its own country. They have their own military, police force, currency and passport. The Taiwanese passport is recognised worldwide and is more powerful than a passport from China.

As a Ukrainian, I’m disappointed in you Denys. Democracies should support democracies. Taiwan is independent and should stay independent. China has no rights over Taiwan.

As a Taiwanese, we don’t think we will ever rule mainland, it’s their country, we do hope one day they will have better government. Most of our generation never think we will go back someday, it will be just unrealistic. But we do need to change ROC constitution by about our territory including mainland but at the same time not being attacked by PRC. That’s the tricky part and many people against us for still claiming owning the territory of mainland. We know it’s outdated. And that’s why we can only stuck in this situation for long time.

Taiwan belongs to China(PRC if you mean) is not based on international law, only based on the understanding between PRC so many countries respect that. But still how you can have the right of something you never had before?

However, the more discussion about Taiwan will let more people understand our situation. Thank you Denys!

Dennis,
I was in Taiwan in the 1970's. I was in the US Air Force. We had bases there. They want freedom just like Ukraine.
China and Russia want to dominate.

Denys, mate, I've been a supporter of your channel for months. I watch all your updates about the situation in Ukraine. You are Ukrainian and are passionate about your country. That is commendable!
As others have said, if this channel starts discussing difficult topics such as the Taiwan issue, then many will lose interest.

I sincerely hope that you continue your excellent updates about the situation in Ukraine. Слава Україні!
Freedom yes; autocracy/dictatorship no.

First time I have to disagree witrh Denys: International law: The right of people to self-determination is one of the fundamental rights of international law. It states that a folk has the right freely to decide about their political status, their form of government and their economic, social and cultural development. This includes the freedom from foreign rule. This right to self-determination enables a folk to form a nation or their own national state! Taiwan would do that, if their neighbour China would not interfere!

I have family in Taiwan, but I am not a Taiwanese citizen myself so I won't speak for them. To me, what's important is that Denys 100% supports the continued freedom and open democracy of the people in Taiwan. For that I am thankful and appreciative.

The UN only says it is one country because Taiwan said that. But Taiwan is backing away from that now, Taiwanese people don't think of themselves as Chinese anymore. What you are saying is yesterday's story. Regardless of whether the CCP collapses or not, Taiwan wants to be independent.
