Sly Stone's new memoir

Sly Stone, who invented his own kind of funky hybrid of rock 'n' roll and R&B with his '60s group Sly and the Family Stone, has been living a private life for decades. Now 80, the reclusive music great has just penned a memoir, "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)." Correspondent Kelefa Sanneh talks with Questlove (who published the book), Sly's longtime friend George Clinton, and with Sly's real family, about the musician's revolutionary band; a life revolving around drugs; and how he is today.

The best part is that he is alive and clean for 4 years. With a family that obviously loves him. Keep it up Mr. Stone.

Young people today don't understand how revolutionary Sly was. All the music we hear today, and of the last 50 years, have been influenced by Sly.

He Should get the Kennedy Center Honors for his contributions to American Culture. Along with James Brown, The Meters and George Clinton, he helped pioneer the sound of funk and made it successful.

What's always impressed me about Sly Stone is, despite his contrarian image, the positivity of his songs. From inspirational songs like "Stand" and "Everyday People" to happy songs like "Dance to the Music" and "Sing a Simple Song, " they all seemed created to improve your day.

“There's a Riot Goin' On” is one of the greatest albums ever made.

Sly is an icon. How many of us listened to "Stand, and in the end you'll still be you, one who's done all the things you set out to do" with pride

I'm 66 and grew up with their INCREDIBLE music! So many great songs. I also feel that Sly was Prince, before there was Prince... great blend of funk, soul and pop, and just pure genius talent!

There was nobody who didn’t like Sly's music. Everybody loved Sly And The Family Stone.

Sly's children come off as wonderfully normal, strong and kind. A reflection of what Sly is really like inside.

🥺 He's been clean for 4 years and he's 80. He definitely has 9 lives.

Sly was a musical genius who doesn't get the credit he deserves imho. What happened to him is heartbreaking. Hopefully this book will set the record straight.

I saw Sly in Ithaca, N.Y. In 1968 at the Boxcar, a very small venue made from two boxcars right after Dance to the Music was released. To see Sly and the Family Stone in such an intimate setting was an incredible experience. Best concert I’ve ever been to.

The fact that he isn’t credited more and appreciated more is a crime. There is no other like Sly and the music he created stands above even to this day. A master.

I'm glad he's still around and his beautiful children protect him. It's a comfort to see he had family he can trust. Bless him ❤

It was nice to hear that Sly is still with us, so sad he let drugs cut his music career in half. Hope he knows how talented he was.

Sly is the man, nobody close to how hip and riotous he was, a pure singer, no auto tune needed.
