Should Apple ban Google and Facebook?

I’ve gone over Facebook’s year of scandals, Google and Amazon’s struggles with ethics and abuses, and Apple’s calls for privacy regulations.

That last one has caused some pushback. What about Apple and Google Search? What about Apple and China? What about Apple and cross platform services? What about Apple and App Store app abuses? What about… you get the idea.

And that’s fine. That’s great. That’s exactly what I want. I said from the beginning that all of this, all the videos I’ve done on privacy and security, were meant to be parts of the conversation.

So, let’s converse.

We need more cooperation in the tech industry. YouTube needs to support 1440p and 4K 60 in Safari on MacOS and 1440p 60p on iOS.

YouTube is the only Google service I can’t live without. I could change my search engine and use Apple Maps but YouTube, no.

I hate google. But Apple shouldn’t ban google. Apple should outdo google. Simply offer superior services. Apple is one of the few companies who could actually pull it off, if they really wanted to. And do it while maintaining users’ privacy.

Nobody is even close to google services in terms of quality. 99% of people would switch it to google immediately, the same as how most install chrome/Firefox first thing

I agree to every single point you mentioned here. I would also like to add that apple should immediately ban free weather apps from the AppStore. I think it is quite obvious that free weather apps are nothing but location harvesting brokers!

Apple should offer the user a choice about how locked down they want to be. I just replaced my first generation Pixel with an iPhone Xs. The ONLY reason I considered Apple this time was because I could replace the Apple apps with Gmail, Google maps, and Google calendar, I could put a Google assistant widget on the widget screen and call the Google assistant from Siri using a shortcut, and I could use Google maps in Car play. I suspect that most users prefer convenience over privacy in spite of Apple's hard privacy sell.

Id love Apple search and AppleTube. The further i can get away from google the better.

People wanna moan about “Apple’s walled garden”, oh but data collecting CIA linked Google Walled Garden is just great aint it?

YouTube’s algorithms are already reading my mind. I’m scrolling through YouTube thinking “I wonder how much data google and Facebook can harvest through iOS since it’s supposed to be the most secure mobile platform” and this video pops up in my feed. One of the reasons I’ve been sticking with Apple rather than switching back to android is how secure they claim to be.

Rene, please work on slowing down. I really like your content but you cover so much so quickly that it’s hard to process everything that you say. Don’t cut between shots so quickly and take a second to breathe so that your viewers can process what you have to say.

if Apple do that, iPhone will end up like Windows phone.

Banning apps that people use the most would be worse for Apple than the high prices they charge. Eg. I never considered the Windows Phone because I feared it might not have some apps that I want to download. Apple has a lot of sheep, not pigs.

The video was a great watch but I have to disagree with the "ask you to choose a browser thing". Next thing we have to choose every single application on the phone. It's easy to single out Google since we "google stuff" nowadays but the option to choose a browser might lead us having to choose too many things on startup. A mac doesn't come with Chrome but on every new mac, the first thing I do is download google chrome(I've never been a safari user). The sensible defaults thing makes sense, even if companies are paying to be the default. If you are very security conscious, you'll change things anyway so it will be an inconvenience for a lot of us.

Apple's high moral ground talk is just that talk. It can't possibly tell customers that privacy and security is morally ethical while it continues to engage businesses that build their phones who's industrial relations policies are drawn from the 1800s. We can go on and talk about tax avoidance, right to repair, arrogant attitudes to consumer and competition law and more.

One of the few channels that I look at the subscriber count and just don’t get why it’s not in the millions. Rene, you’ll get a major deal one day from a major brand to do what you do best. Your millions will come (followers and subscribers). Well done!
