Cvt are just as reliable as they were back then

Because they break. It’s really that simple. I have 3 homies who blew a cvt. 2 from a Subaru and the other was a Nissan. Toyota CVTS are better. But I’d still prefer a regular gearbox. We already know they last. My 2000 civic supposedly has a trash automatic transmission that doesn’t last. Well I’ve had zero issues and it’s at 230k miles. If that was a cvt it would have blown by now.

Cvts were banned from f1 for being too fast. No gear changes means faster car

No, it's not that they don't shift that bothers me. It's that automakers have them fake shift, and it makes them feel like shit, as apposed to being the comfortable smooth glide up to speed that they should be. And when you give the car some gas, trying to excelerate quickly, the cars that I've rented with them feel like they hunt for gears and take way to long downshifting. They all have felt like a clapped out 90's Honda Odyssey with a burnt out automatic

The repairs are expensive because most cvt owners pay a shop and the shops are all car guys that dont want cvts to drive so they dont even want to work on them so they charge a arm and a leg. Guess what u have to maintain them. U change the oil every 50k miles then every 100k miles its like chaging engine oil as far as the labor. Iv had 2 cvts and the cars body fell apart but it still ran and drove smooth. I got it to 265, 000 then baught another car with a cvt im currently at 180k miles baught it at 100k zero issues one fluid flush and no check engine lights

I have driven two Honda's with CVT's since 1918. I have never had a problem with them.

The whole "way more fuel efficient" thing is a flat out lie. The Toyota Camry has an 8 speed conventional auto and no hybrid system and is just as efficient as a CVT sedan of comperable size. Now, I've driven CVTs, I actually think they feel kinda cool, but the sluggish power delivery when you begin rolling and unreliability is NOT worth it.

my 09 audi a4 2.0 CVT gets upward of 35MPG is pretty incredible. I love it.

I actually love Toyota's CVT on the hybrid cars, feels so smooth, not sporty by any means but it's not used on sporty cars so I can't see the problem.

People forget cvt need servicing with oil and filter. Then they can be just as reliable

The familiar shifting he is soeaking about is the clunk slam and pop from the engine. It wears down the gears way faster. Why do all taken car of cars with the cvts last longer

I once drove a modern one. The throttle respons was awful, it felt sluggish and the sound was terrible.
I'll take the manual all day!

Mine has 8 specific preset positions so you can drive it like a manual if you want, as for acceleration, they excellent at keeping you at peak torq or power, the only issue I have is that with the belt drive being crap, I'm restricted to about 220 brake or so and it's not quattro, excellent economy though if you drive them right

All older, now unreliable CVTs were once new CVTs. Today's new CVTs are the unreliable, expensive to fix older CVTs of tomorrow.

CVTs do not last bottom line you will pay more in repairs than you will ever save in gas

They're not bad at all in scooters, the reason cvts fail in cars is that they're bad at carrying heavy weight, which isn't a problem on scooters since they weigh 200kg including rider, and if they DO fail, the repair costs $60 and you can do it at home.

I don't think it's the fuel efficiency that the car brands care about. It's the fact that they're cheaper to manufacture is what they care about to be honest with you

I have no idea why car manufacturers can't get a CVT right John deere has a Reliable CVT that can handle hundreds of horsepower for years
