They kind of did explain the protomolecule in a previous season when they were on illis. It's technology sent out into the universe to explore and prepare for 'the builders' who were then all destroyed.
Anthony's flash back to thinking Amos was an ai made me laugh.. definitely need to read the books! Do I remember you saying you have a bit of a commute to work? The audio books are awesome and good to listen to in the car

We know "the builders" have been dead for eons.
The answers about the ancients that killed them and how it'll affect humanity is a series long/9book long arc!
This has always been a story about Earth, Mars and the belt.
We stumbled upon proto tech and tried unsuccessfully to use it which escalated the war.
Like you said, " when you got answers about white walkers it was underwhelming" which is almost always true, in films, tv and lit.
They're showing us what's going on over on Laconia with protomonclue right now with the Strange Dog stuff...with more to be revealed like what they just sent through the gate to Marco at the end of ep3.
The builders and their killers is the long game story, and instead of trying to cram that into book 6 stuff, they are giving hints about where that goes with the novella at the beginning of each ep.
There is absolutely no way to bring that story/answers in one season, even if it was 13 eps.
So, we are getting the conclusion to the Earth, Mars and belt conflict that we've been following since day one.
With hints of what may come next for humanity in a universe with life altering alien tech.

We won't get satisfying resolutions of all the plotlines, but I'll enjoy the ride while it lasts... Happy New Year!

Oh, and hopefully they'll cast Wes Chatham as the new Wolverine in the MCU, and Frankie Wells as, well I don't know who but someone cool. 😀
