What is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization? The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, its more commonly known abbreviation, is an intergovernmental military alliance.

Its primary purpose is to promote collective defense and security among its member states. The organization was established with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty. Currently has 31 member countries, with its largest member militaries being the US, Turkey, France, Germany and Italy. As mentioned before, the alliance has existed since 1949, mainly as a deterrent to the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact during the cold war which lasted from the late 1940s until 1991.

However, since then, the alliance has expanded into former Warsaw Pact countries, taking on an altered role, such as assuming control of international security forces (ISAF) in Afghanistan after the 2001 invasion.
