NATO rejecting the USSR from joining their alliance is basically like me trying to join in with the cool kids.

Fun fact: most eastern bloc nations are now a part of NATO such as Poland, Hungary and Romania for example.

You forgot to mention an important fact, that after the fall of Warsaw Pact some of its former members joined NATO and are integral part of it today.

Fun fact: the term "third world country" originally referred almost exclusively to nations/factions who were not allied with either NATO or the Soviet States. It wasn't originally a term to refer to poverty stricken countries but rather countries who simply wished to remain neutral during the Cold War. For example Sweden was technically a "third world country" at one point, but they had a stable government and weren't poverty stricken.

The term "third world country" became mildly derogatory because most of these countries were still developing but also because some people in both the US and Russia felt these countries were being "cowardly" for not "picking a side" during the Cold War and the nuclear arms race. And "if only they had accepted (insert NATO or Soviet values here)** then life would have been better for them." It's kind of sad really.

Edit: Can y'all keep your political bullshit away this comment is supposed to be a joke and not a debate if NATO is an US Imperial tool or not
