TLC vs QLC: Which is the Fastest SSD?- Sponsor: Western Digital
When choosing the fastest SSD 2019 has to offer, you are going to come across the TLC vs QLC decision at some point. You may be curious about the differences between these two SSD technologies - and you may assume that since QLC is newer that it's likely faster. Western Digital sent over a WD Blue 3D NAND 1TB PC SSD which we compare to a Samsung 860 Evo SSD when looking at speed when doing common tasks. We test things like copying files, transferring files, moving files from an external drive, and opening and saving large PSD files in Photoshop. As you'll see, there's a big difference between the two technologies once you start filling the drive with data as it pertains to speed when looking for the fastest SSD for gaming or for general tasks. Let me know what you think of the battle between TLC vs QLC SSD!

Seriously glad SSD prices have come down. 500GB and 1TB drives are incredibly affordable now.

QLC = Slower write speeds, Good for gaming. Cheaper
TLC = Faster Write Speeds, Good for projects, 3D animation, Music etc More expensive

Thank you for this explanation Andru. I work with video editing so I was going for Samsung 860QVO 1TB but after watching this video It made it pretty clear what TLC and QLC are. I have ordered a WD Blue 3dNAND 1TB. Thanks again

I was so naive that I thought the newer the better for all sceneries

Usually TLC SSD have Dram, . QLC SSD are usually DRAM-Less, meaning TLC Drives have and advantage of DRAM cache.

Not a lot of people know about that. I recently bout a budget SSD from Micro Center and one that was a little better a 240GB TLC it had DRAM cache.

While the other 1TB had QLC which was DRAM-Less. I think that's why they have the Quad layer's they use some over the blocks for cache and mapping.

Also Over Provisioning helps a lot especially with QLC Drives in write performance I experienced the same fast transfer at first the slow towards the end I over provisioned 15% of my 1TB QLC drive did the same test and it was fast all the way threw. Now some drives come over provisioned and some don't.

Over provision is where you create a blank partition on the drive for things like help cache mapping and trim to move files around

This is awesome. I might grab a few TLC drives for my next build!

QLC is slower and less reliable but cheaper compare to TLC... This helps me a lot. Thanks

Great video, everyone looking at an SSD should watch this.

I get the impression these QLC drives are bad for work but would be fantastic for games. The focus seems to be reading, so if write speed becomes the same as HDDs, then these would be great for downloading games that require faster access to storage because of larger textures. I had an issue with NFS 2015 on a HDD because it wasn't fast enough to load textures and the car would fall down through the road, but as soon as it was put on an SSD it worked perfectly. QLC seems to be ideal for rectifying that kind of thing. Cheaper than TLC for people who mostly just want to read of the disk rather than write, just like games. Sure the download time wouldn't be great, but once it's on the drive you get the better performance, and the most a game will write to a drive while playing is a teeny tiny save file which 90% of the time is stored on the boot drive anyway. So I don't think these are bad, IF you know how to use them in the right place.

I almost never comment on any tech videos and i almost NEVER thumbs up, but YOU? YOU ARE LITERALLY THE ONLY ONE THAT TAUGHT ME THIS AAAAHAHAHAH.. MAAN i was always looking at EVO and NEVER QVO and now i need to apologize and go and buy me a QVO cause i was thinking of buying a 907 plus nvme but i heard they got kinda hotter then normal ssd's so i was looking at EVO but now i have learned of TLC and QLC and now ima TLC guy but i hate the songs scrub though.. i am more into pigeons... Tender Love Care from now on for my add on SSD's and QLC for my OP, Thank you very much!

TLC drives have a longer life span.
There’s a reason why QLC drives are cheaper.

SSDs are faster than a standard HDD so go with a TLC drive over QLC.

SAMSUNG 860 Evo or Samsung 860 Pro are my suggestions if you want an SSD.

Endurance/life span is very important. So when you’re looking for an SSD, check the TBW rating.

What I suggest is getting a 1 TB TLC drive and use it for the OS (only) and then a 4 TB TLC drive for files.

This is very different results than I've seen on other TLC vs QLC drive comparisons.

Samsung's QVO uses an SLC cache very aggressively and actually outperforms their TLC drive often until that cache is filled, then the speeds are comparable to my old mechanical drives, not even my new mechanical drives.

I'm curious what the difference was in your benchmarks. You're showing the weaknesses of the QLC/SLC caching on the drive where as the other reviews did not.
