Okay, just so we're clear, this is NOT the incident from SA2. According to the artist, this takes place in an AU where Maria is brought back to life and now lives with Shadow, Sonic, and all their friends. In this particular comic, Maria is almost killed again, but is rescued by Sonic and Shadow.

The fact that Shadow is smiling is great, I really wish Maria would come back to life in the series.

Plot Twist/ Story change: After shadow was shot out down to Earth. The soldier who shot Maria followed her into the room and was unable to bring themselves to finish her off. So they ended up throwing Maria into a cryo chamber close by before abandoning the ARK, lying to their higher ups that she was killed. Later on Shadow, Eggman, and possibly the entire SA2 cast finding out she’s still alive and in cryo sleep before heading to the Canon’s Core, leading to this ending.

The story:
After Rouge mentions to Silver the events that unfurled in the ARK, he time-travelled to that time with Sonic and Shadow, but stayed behind. Sonic & Shadow went into their Super forms, got into the space colony and stopped Maria getting shot by a GUN soldier. However, she fell over and stumbled into an escape pod similar to Shadow's, crashing down to the planet below. Shadow was too shocked to move, but Sonic, with his version of Chaos Control, saved Maria and let the pod fall (thankfully, Spiderman 2099 was too busy stopping MrBeast pay Hitler to stay out of politics to prevent the canon event being changed).
