Agriculture may not be able to feed the extra 2 billion people that are estimated to inhabit Earth by 2050.

Quartz News' Erik Olsen dives into the world of aquaculture to find a sustainable food source for the planet. Eating mussels could solve the problem and help the planet — but are we willing to introduce them into our diet?

great idea but even better if we can stop putting so much trash into our oceans, otherwise it'll go straight to our stomachs

A singular component aquaculture is only a small to moderate improvement from the current system. Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA) that conbine aquatic plants (eg. seaweed), fish, filter feeders (e.g., mussels) and deposit feeders (e.g., sea urchins) will be the future. It maximizes feed to calorie conversion efficiency, minimizes feed waste and keeps the water clean.

Bold to assume the ocean will be capable of sustaining substantial life in 2050

If they filter the water for food, what about micro plastic?

If we make it to 2050, that would be great.

They filter the sea and help cleaning it so you can eat everything they filter. Oil, chemicals, micro-plastics, mercury...what a great idea!

They should have mentioned that Mussels filter all the toxic metals and microplastics out of the ocean, which you then eat.
It's already known that you shouldn't eat a lot of them because of it.

If mussels are reasonably priced, I'm definitely willing to make them a part of my regular diet. However most places I've been to, it's considered a luxury food, and they are quite expensive.

I’m not a huge fan of the texture but they’re so delicious and if they’re good for the environment, well, SIGN ME UP!

If they filter their food from the water, it could be a very effective way of cleaning the water this seems like a very sustainable way of food. People may not like mussels but theres a very broad way of cooking and seasoning them! There are tons of recipes for them :) just make this video widespread im counting on youtube to put this on the recommended and for anyone that sees this comment, please thumbs this up to maybe get this on the trending page.

Unfortunately, these mussels can sometimes get "Red Tide" which is harmful to humans.

That’s if pollution and global warming doesn’t kill the ocean first

Moules frites - two pounds of mussles in creamy wine shallot sauce with french fires on the side. It's heavenly.
