This gives the same energy as “With your tech you could cure cancer!” “But I don’t want to cure cancer I want to turn people into dinosaurs.”

“They would want magic to solve their problems.” As if that isn’t also their solution

Fun fact there was a guy named Merlin who WANTED to help those without magic.

Now his name is a wizard swear

Least insane Harry Potter worldbuilding :

There was a book I read a long time ago where magic was secret not because they didn’t want to help but because they would be blamed for stuff like famines or plagues. There a scene where they showed to history of a wizard who protected his community but the moment food started to rot they strung him up and burned him.

I think the worst part is, the ONLY thing it could do is help.

“But magic weapons-“ Gary, we have nukes that render areas unsafe for hundreds of years and turn deserts to oceans of glass. We don’t need magic.

“But we might stop advancing-“ no, we wouldn’t. Computer scientists need jobs, and magic is kind of useless when we’ve gotten this far.

You know what magic COULD do, though? It could help solve conflicts in a non-lethal way. It could help us rescue people in horrible situations.

All the magical community has to do is make a treaty with the UN or president pf where they live. People have seen weirder shit than magic.

The use of magic in war could also be registered as a war crime. This would prevent furthering of weapons.

Also, you know who this would help? Muggle-born wixen. Knowing that the magical community exists allows them to avoid feeling ostracized among their own family, and allows their family to properly research what their child is going through. It also might stop a child from being branded as a liar — thus, they stop talking to their parents about their magic, and (possibly) other, serious things.

Wizards: “B-but we can’t let people have access to the killing curse! It’s to powerful and dangerous!”
Guns: “Am I a joke to you?”

it'd be interesting to see a story where the whole hiding-from-normies thing is framed by the narrative as morally wrong. there's a bunch of different ways you could play that, even.

Fate has one of my favorite reasons on why magic is kept secret. Because their magic runs on the mystery surrounding them, and the more people know about magic, the weaker the magic gets.

It's a lot better than just saying "we don't want to help" because in Fate, they can't help.

Im reminded of the matt mercer Brannan lee mulligan discussion on the topic. Because it is infact animal cruelty to use the slowest of birds qs your mail system WHEN YOU CAN LITERALLY TELEPORT. If you apply qny critical thinking or any attempts to use engineering then the world building really starts to fall apart.

Trying to write a light-hearted fantasy without turning into a thinly veiled setup for classist argumentation:

The longer you go on hiding it, the more awkward it gets to stand up and say "so we've been able to help out this whole time actually!"

In HP lore to my understanding, the actual proper reason is that Muggles outnumber Wizards something like 1000 to 1, like when Sirus mentioned that if it weren't for halfbloods they'd be stuck marrying their cousins. So basically if wizards revealed themselves, and had ANY conflict with Muggles ever, they'd get desimated and hunted to extinction without nomajs breaking a sweat. That makes the Statute of Secrecy pretty reasonable, Hagrid just isnt up to date on politics.

I love that Hagrid says that if Muggles knew about magic “they’d want magic solutions to all their problems” and then DOES NOT offer any sort of a reason why that’d be a bad thing, especially funny as literally EVERY problem in the series was fixed by magic

Remember: The reason the story is this way is because JK Rowling thinks (or thought, at the time of writing) that this is a just society.

That’s like inventing the cure for cancer and then said “if we let people know about this, everyone would want it to solve their cancer” yeah man, that’s THE POINT

HP wordbuilding is like the props on a stage - painted cardbord that is looks good enough from a distance and the spotlight is on the actors anyway.

Choosing the slowest flying bird to deliver messages when you can teleport is just animal cruelty

This is entirely reflective of the underlying ethos to the Harry Potter series: "positive systemic change is bad, maintaining the status quo is good, everyone should only do their own thing and not try to solve problems on a wider scale".

Jk really loves bringing up really interesting moral dilemmas and then just - never address them. It’s so cool .
