I used to eat a lot of canned beans, but concerns about BPA drove me to get an InstantPot. It's so easy to make a huge batch of beans with low/no salt and lots of greeat spices, and then freeze most of it.

Yikes!!! basically, "You're damned if you do, and you're damned if you don't." Thanks, Plant Based Science London. Always giving us the Pros and Cons.

If you've got a pressure cooker, you can make huge pots of beans inexpensively and easily. And if it's too much, freeze the rest. If buying bulk dry beans, the pressure cooker will pay for itself quickly compared to buying canned beans.

I live between Spain and Belgium. In Spain, most cooked legumes are sold in glass jars, in Belgium, in cans... Luckily in Belgium we stll can buy a limited amount of Spanish brands in jars. I find the jars so much safer and useful to store things in the kitchen.

A study showing how much BPA is reduced by rinsing would be helpful.

i'm not sure why this is news. I've been checking for BPA free cans for over a decade; buying everything from beer to soup in glass bottles; and am pleased with the new tera-paks that have come on the market recently (my beans come in those. The BPA studies resulted in its removal of this chemical from baby bottles and sippy cups a long time ago.

Wow i heard about this years ago but I didn't know the specific harm BPA could cause. This is why I stopped eating canned food. I only buy dry beans and frozen vegetables. Thanks so much for sharing.

In Spain cooked legumes traditionally come in crystal jars (mainly chickpeas and beans) kind of like for example Passata does in the UK, so the only plastic lining is on the metal lid.
Sometimes you can find chickpeas in crystal jars at the Spanish week at Lidl (at least 5 years ago when I lived in the UK).

I struggled with these problems myself until I bought a canner and some jars. Now I have organically grown beans with no salt added conveniently in my cupboard (in glass jars)...

"BPA free" most likely means they just used a different phthalate in your food product since there are several kinds of phthalates.

What about cans without any coating in them, which is the majority of tinned foods in uk. ...are they bad cos of metals leaching in ?

On Biona's website it states that they now use aluminised polyester and gold organosol lacquer to line their cans. Ok but how do we know that is safe given that it took so long to recognise the dangers of BPA?

Well, it's difficult, but I'm going to have to get back to soaking and cooking my beans again 🫘

I nearly always cook my dry beans in a pressure cooker (POWER XL-8QT). I rarely use canned beans, and I drain and rinse them when I do. I bought a stainless steel inner pot for the INSTANT POT brand, which also fits the POWERXL. Adding powdered ingredients or quicker-cooking foods like Lentils to hard, dry beans will cause an overheating error.

I soak & pressure cook my dried beans in my electric pressure cooker. Pressure cooked Pinto beans in passata taste better than any type of tinned baked beans

Instead of metal cans choose glass jars if available. Frozen or dried beans are great options.

I've been using Eden canned beans for years. Hope that's good enough. Also Trader Joes claim they do not use BPA so hopefully that brand is OK too. I tried cooking beans from scratch but I found it difficult to get them right... either undercooked or overcooked. And I tried freezing them so I could cook in bulk but they didn't freeze well.
