For years I used a 1.5-person tent - single hoop, very small - and even when I was young and slim, getting changed in the tent was a nightmare, having to fold double to pull a jersey or t-shirt off over my head (could not do it sitting up).
Now I use hammock and tarp. I can set the tarp high enough that I can stand up if I want or snug it down against the weather, there's plenty of room for my gear without tripping over it, can sit and cook dinner or make a coffee under shelter.
If the worse comes to the worst and there are no suitable trees, in a pinch I could set the tarp up like you have the poncho and use the hammock as a bug-proof bivi on a ground sheet.

Good, simple but authorative tent choce summary. I got to the same conclusion about the stand up tent (Vango Tiree 3) after several hit and miss, and expensive attempts. Last year my brilliant Goose tent was a nightmare in France in days of torrential rain - rolling about in mud, unable to cook or get dressed easily was enough and as we age the problem increases. Thanks again for your forthright comments.

Been doing this for years and prefare a smaller tent and a tarp. If its wet i can just put the tarp over the tents entrance making a large vestibule i can sit in and cook and if the weather is good i dont need to use it. Weighs very little and takes up no space. Totally agreen about the bike, my crash bars are pretty beat up as i do ride trails and iam not big on cleaning. Its an adventure bike ffs !

Great video, I spent many nights sleeping under a basha supported by various types of green motorbikes always slept the sleep of the dead mostly due to being knackered after hours delivering map traces or documents of one type or another. The bikes were nothing as fancy as the GS but worked and were fairly easy to fix especially before mobiles etc. amazing what we carried too. thanks for sharing, the Lone rider tent is amazing. cheers

I just got a cheaper waterproof two man tent and use a large ripstop tarp to cover my entire camp and the bike. Cheaper and easier to set up.

I prefer minimalist. 2-man tent, mattress, bag and chair. Sundry items: water bladder, headlamp, very simple cook kit.
The only thing I splurge on is a really good insulated inflatable mattress. Nothing spoils a trip more than not being able to have a good night sleep.

British army tarp & army bungees by the looks of it. Decent quality tarps those but a bit on the small side. Modern silnylon ones can be had for around £20-30 or a D&D camo one which are a fair bit bigger than the one shown here for £50. You'd also needa bivvy sleeping system to go with it though. Tarp & Bivvy is my preferred way of camping when going wild.

Firstly I have to admit I have both the lone rider tents the actual ADV tent is a good compromise if you don't want something as big as the moto tent, but there's enough room to sit up and get dressed and a small porch to cook under if it's raining. The poncho or tarp idea looks good, BUT if it's raining or windy or worse still midgets are about it wouldn't be fun stuck in there even for one night. The mototent is great for sheltered sites but it doesn't like wind much. The ADV tent is a good compromise.
Having said all that you can buy a decent 3 man tent with a cooking area blacked out bedroom from Go out doors for £65 if budget is an issue.
And yes definitely have the bike learning away from you even in the moto tent. Use a puck under the side stand and don't use a centre stand as the bike could still decide it's coming your way in the nigh.

Vango galaxy 300 would be the perfect in between tent for you.

There is one thing no one seems to mention and i found it crucial is to choose a tent that stands on its own, without pegging to the ground. I have ended up in places numerous times where it was rocky, or simply on concrete and had no chance to peg.

Add a bivy and ground sheet to the tarp🤘🏾also, in Australia you’ll want to bag up the boots and helmets. Bloody dingoes steal them 😂
