How to Get File Explorer to Display Details by Default

✅ Windows File Explorer does not display details by default but rather a simple view of files on your machine that is not secure. Change the display details settings as soon as you can.

✔ In Windows File Explorer, in the View menu/ribbon, in Layout, click on Details.
✔ On the far right of the ribbon, click on Options, then Change folder and search options.
✔ In the resulting dialog click on the View tab.
▶ Check Always show menus.
▶ Check Show hidden files, folders and drives.
▶ Uncheck Hide empty drives in the Computer folder.
▶ Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
▶ Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
✔ Click Apply.
✔ Click Apply to all Folders.

Hi Leo, this fix used to work; now, however, the "Apply to Folders" option is greyed out and cannot be clicked. Is there any fix to this new situation?

Showing File extensions is definitely a MUST. You can handle files way better and it is good for security. Indeed.

When I click on Detail, it doesn't show the size in the window like yours! but if I hover over any file, it shows its size! I like to see the size without hovering, just like yours!

Thank you. But can you tell me why on one of my hard drives, a folder with 1000 images will display the DATE field instantly, but on another drive, the date field takes minutes to load and the green status bar takes forever?

Thanks for the info. I have never seen an operating system that carries so many complaints and it is not just one complaint . It just shows Microsoft does not care about the people who use it but only about getting your data and the money they can get PERIOD ! . I always have a Linux fallback so that when I get sick and tired of Windows I can get a breath of fresh air. :O)

I have seen a number of programs that offer degrees of sophistication in their options through a master switch choosing "NOVICE", "INTERMEDIATE, "EXPERT" to change a larger number of settings at once. Unfortunate that Microsoft can't acknowledge that some of their users can understand at a higher lever and don't require (or want) everything "dumbed down."
