2 Mind Bending Puzzles You Can Do at the Bar!

This week you can challenge your drinking buddies with a couple of fun brain teasers. The first one's just a warm up. Use straws or matches to set up a tic-tac-toe pattern on the table. Give them six coins and see if they can set all six of them on the grid without having three in a row anywhere. Then the BIG challenge: take that same tic-tac-toe pattern and rearrange the straws to make three perfect squares in as little moves as possible.

I got both puzzles in less than 5 seconds.
I suppose the only way these would be "mind bending" is if the person you were playing with was drunk, which explains why they're bar tricks.

Everybody thinks they're so smart for immediately figuring these out behind their computer screens...the thing is, whenever you're trying to act smart in front of a bunch of people, especially a camera crew (and a guy with a very terrifying hairdo), you're just not going to think as well as you normally do. You're going to be distracted by those around you and their thoughts or what they're saying/doing. Did you ever have a moment in a classroom as a kid when you were called to do a simple problem on the board and you took way too long to figure it out? Yeah, same thing here.

I did the first puzzle in 5 seconds...

He told her should could start over when she was 1 move from getting it at the start. He was like "for some reason people get so close and don't see the last move" but he encouraged her to go back and start at the beginning

I got both quickly, but that doesn't mean they're stupid. None of them wanted to attempt it because they didn't want to be seen to fail, and there's also the pressure of being on camera. Very few people are unaffected in performance by people watching. The Key to the first one is not to put one in the middle. The side squares can only be involved in 2 full lines, corners involved in 3 but the centre square can be involved in 4. So you first avoid that square and second put 1 coin in each side square. as none of them can be linked together. Then you put coins in any two opposing corners and you're done. Avoiding the centre square is key in solving it.
The second one is also easy to solve, its the solving it in 3 moves part that's harder. But once you realise there are 12 straws, then you realise the 3 squares have to be separate, so to solve it in only three moves you have to dismantle (at least in part) the centre square. If you take one part of the centre square away to form one other full square, it then becomes obvious what to do to form another 2 full squares in just 2 moves.
Thats just logical thinking you can go through before you even attempt the puzzle.
But logical thinking under pressure isn't always possible, so people here trying to act clever and make themselves feel better by calling these five dumb only ever shows themselves to be ignorant.
