BABBITT by Sinclair Lewis P1 - FULL AudioBook | Greatest AudioBooks
Babbitt, first published in 1922, is a novel by Sinclair Lewis. Largely a satire of American culture, society, and behavior, it critiques the vacuity of middle-class American life and its pressure toward conformity. An immediate and controversial bestseller, Babbitt is one of Lewis's best-known novels and was influential in the decision to award him the Nobel Prize in literature in 1930.

The word "Babbitt" entered the English language as a "person and especially a business or professional man who conforms unthinkingly to prevailing middle-class standards" (Summary adapted from wiki)

Reading this book for an english class at Queens College. The writing is very detailed so I can see why alot of my classmates find this book boring. I haven't finished the book yet but I like some of Sinclair Lewis's phrases. He chooses his words very carefully. Babbitt is an interesting potrayl of Americans in the 1920's. George Babbitt represents so many Americans striving for the American Dream. We see Zenith as an example of an American city and Floral Heights a suburb. Myra Babbitt as the Good Wife sheds some light on the role of women and how they were viewed in the twenties. Verona represents the new generation as she rebels against the older generation. I think this book has been held up as a classic for the potrayl of the American Dream and America in the 1920's. Its about conformity and social heirarcy, hypocracy and Irony.

I got this book from an art professor who I'm sure was high out of his mind or just a bit off in some way. I got about half way through until life got in the way. It's nice to be able to listen this way now.

Just made it through 12+ hours of Babbitt.  As good a writer as Lewis was, and as good a job as the reader did, this was B-O-R-I-N-G!!!.   I kept hoping for someone to burst in with a shotgun and blow him away.  If anyone really likes it, please let me know why.

A fine reading -- one of the best I've heard -- but marred by far too many mispronunciations. I just heard "paternal" pronounced "parental, " and "belched" as "bleached." Almost every page contains similar errors, which surprise me because the voice sounds "educated." -- But I repeat: this reading is very good, and I thank everyone involved.

The problem with the book is that central character is supposed to be a horrible and boring person and the writing is so successful at that that you hate reading it/spending time with the guy.

Can't you see Donald Trump making Babbitt's speech to the Realtor's Guild? Trump would fit right in with the Boosters at the Hotel Thornleigh barber shop!
