Babbitt, first published in 1922, is a novel by Sinclair Lewis. Largely a satire of American culture, society, and behavior, it critiques the vacuity of middle-class American life and its pressure toward conformity. An immediate and controversial bestseller, Babbitt is one of Lewis's best-known novels and was influential in the decision to award him the Nobel Prize in literature in 1930.

A great novel with excellent narration! Has relevance today. I drew from it that a "pillar of society" who did things conventionally realizes that, at times, it is necessary to go off the beaten track to give meaning to his life.

A fine reading -- but I just heard "ample-bosomed" pronounced "ample-blossomed, " and such errors are unfortunately not rare.

Anybody who wants to know why the USA is the way it is, needs to read Babbitt - again and again.
