Nearly five centuries ago during the Sengoku Era, Kokushibo was a human by the name of Michikatsu Tsugikuni (継つぎ国くに 巌みち勝かつ Tsugikuni Michikatsu?), a former Demon Slayer,[4] and the older twin brother of Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the strongest Demon Slayer that had ever existed.

Kokushibo is also the ancestor of Muichiro Tokito and Yuichiro Tokito[6] and the one responsible for turning Zenitsu Agatsuma's senior, Kaigaku, into a demon and joining the Twelve Kizuki.

If you see carefully, then all three upper moons were so powerful that 2 to 3 hashiras together also were not able to defeat them. And logically they even can't. It was always some outer factor that cause their defeat.
Akaza = previous memories
Doma = poison
Kokushibo = previous memories. and realization

And even in case of muzan, the poison made by Tamayo made him week by increasing his age.

The way Sanemi withstand kokushibou (unmarked) initially and the way he perform those wind breathing forms against kokushibou plus that iconic swords striking pose will definately make sanemi as a fan favourite hashira.
Even death has rejected sanemi for his bravery . With only two finger loses, Sanemi survives two of the greatest battle of demon slayer on that night.
