Something to do with just the right amount of detail provided by the narration and the maps, the vague sense of scale of it all, the lack of familiarity with the events - it just makes it epic and captivating in much the same way as listening to stories as a child.

I think the most surprising thing for me is that the Sultan listened to his commanders and didn't enforce what he himself wanted and that the archduke of Austria decided to give command for the most part to the more experienced commanders instead of trying to take the honors himself.
