Exposed to acute stress, espcially in the form of ACEs, students can experience a toxic stress response in the brain, which can translate into their entering the classroom in a state of flight, fight, freeze, or fawn. The more educators learn how students' behavior -- from being defiant or disruptive, defeatist, or perfectionistic -- is a form of communication, the more they can offer the appropriate supports and strategies.
