As an I.T. engineer and photographer who has seen many hard drives fail over the years, I can tell you that storing all of your memories in one place on one drive is a VERY bad idea. Also, the recommended drive in this video is from Seagate, which regularly has high failure rates according to the BackBlaze annual drive report. I would recommend using an external simply as a temporary "work drive" to off-load your SD cards to, and immediately upload that set of photos/videos to an online storage company like SmugMug, Flickr or Shutterfly for archiving. Yes, you could always have 2 drives mirrored at home, but what happens if you have a break-in/theft, a flood, fire, or lightening strike/surge? Having data stored in more than one location is crucial if you absolutely must retain that data.
