If I was a god, I’d want to be the god of lost knowledge. Anything written or theorized that humans have destroyed, lost, defaced of cast away I would keep safe in my own realm, and repair it for when humans are ready for it again. Also, I’d control an army of sprites and faeries and other little creatures who would help me recover those types of things, act as curators, scribes, and my messengers between other gods and humans.

For school I had to do a perspective writing essay for a character in Beowulf, and I chose the Dragon. I immediately thought of Smaug and drew a lot of inspiration from rereading/rewatching all of Smaug's dialogue. I think it's kind funny and that I characterized a Beowulf character based on a Tolkien character, based on a Beowulf character (if only loosely because as you said JRR didn't actually find much complexity in the character of the dragon). It shows a lot about how iconic the Legendarium is that it has such a repeating effect on modern writing and an influence comparable to Norse/Medieval mythology : )

God of wyverns. I wouldn't be able to control wyverns or summon them I would just go around correcting people who call wyverns dragons. For example, skrill, deadly nadders, monstrous nightmares etc are all wyverns technically. Even the design of smaug technically makes him a wyvern.
