Ep 39: Understanding Navigational Aids

Welcome to Episode 39 of Carpe Diem Sailing. I'm back on my regular posting schedule and in this episode I go over the navigational aids systems in IALA Region A and B. I also dispel the rule of thumb of "Red Right Returning" which only works in half the world and in very specific situations. Best to always consult a chart. I cover the lateral buoys, day-beacons, bifurcation buoys, cardinal buoys, special buoys and talk about navigational ranges. as usual I will have shownotes on our website. Also FYI I always turn off mid roll ads.

The best thing about your channel Marco, is that whenever I am studying something, I find that your videos always make it easier to understand. I shared this video with a classmate of mine. Hope all is well friend.

I find ships and sailing fascinating. Especially maps and charts..my kitty cat loves your opening sequence with the seabird calling. He's fascinated too. Happy Holidays!

Good, useful, articulate. Just one thing, similar to all documents I have come across, Taiwan is marked as being in region A when it is in region B. Regards to all fellow boaters.

Thanks for the instruction and "show" notes. You're awesome for helping the rest of us with coastal navigation.

This topic gave me massive confusion until now. Thanks for the video.

One of the clearest explanations I've seen. Great job. 👍

3:50 First time I've ever encountered someone bringing this up! Thank you! Damn confusing! I always enjoy your videos, and get something from each one.

Welcome back!!! Great review!! Makes complete sense why the ICW is “backwards” in certain locations. Looking forward to your single handed videos!!

Great episode. I'm getting back into boating after about 8 years and this really helped my memory.

I now live in Florida but still keep a boat on the Puget Sound. To get up to date on signage on the ICW, I came onto this video. Very well done, and it is so good to see charts from my "home" waters being used for the demonstrations. Oh yes, the Comox Bar, a crossing of that in inclement weather can be very interesting. Cheers.

Well back! One of the clearest examples I’ve seen. Thank you. Read returning makes absolutely no sense in my mind, not only because I sail in the United Kingdom but it’s ‘conditional’. I solo sail 99% of the time so I’m subscribed :)

Another brilliant tutorial. Clear and very thoughtful. So looking forward to your single-handed sailing tutorials. This is what I will very likely be doing. Your experience and exceptional tutorial skills are very welcome.
Great to see you back!!!

Finally, someone explained it all correct. I thought it was only me who considered all this ''Red-Right-Return'' completely misleading, and only works partially. ;)

Very interesting. Yes, Region A is opposite of Region B as I recently experienced in those waters. Most of my sailing has been in the U.S. Thanks!
