What are Wilt Chamberlain's stats, adjusted to the modern NBA?

What would Wilt Chamberlain average in the year 2021, playing at a much slower pace and only 36 minutes per game? That's what I calculated with this video. If you want me to make a similar video on another player from a past era, let me know in the comments.

Adjusting to 36 min per game is fair. It's within the realm of the minutes players in this era play. Though I think the PPG is on the low side because of the difference in the eras. In this era I think Wilt carreer avg would be higher than 18ppg because his efficiency would be higher in this era due to the significant difference in how defense is played. If I had to guess Wilt's fg% would be in the range of 60-65% instead of 54%. 24-25 ppg career avg for this era would be more accurate when considering the differences between eras defensively.

5:16 the block stats arent officially there, but the guy who runs the WiltChamberlainArchive compiled the blocks numbers of 112 games from Wilt over the course of his entire career. The blocks were included by newspapers, for example when the legendary statician Harvey Pollock kept track of it (who also kept track of the stats in Wilts quintuple double game). In these 112 games, Wilt averaged 8.8 blocks per game. JxmyHighroller also included that in one of his videos

About blocks, he had two 28 block games televised. About the rest, he was offered onerous contracts by teams in 80s like Sixers, Knicks, Nets, Clippers, Suns, Bulls, Cavaliers and Mavericks until he was 53 for a reason.

Your analogy is absolutely ridiculous, he played all those minutes because he had the Strength and Stamina to do it, and with people spreading out for 3 point shots now would allow Wilt to have a field day in the modern NBA.

He'd still do amazing things because he is the best athlete and strongest player ever to play in the NBA. He's also the fastest player ever to play in the NBA. He's also the highest leaper to ever play in the NBA.

The biggest error you make is to assume he could play 40 plus minutes. He was a college track athlete and didn't foul out of games or get into foul trouble since other players, including the great Bill Russell had to use fouls to defend him.

I think this video is a little disingenuous for a number of reasons:

1. It doesn’t account for the increase in shooting % you would get with a slower pace. That’s the whole thing with old basketball… more attempts, lower %. Yes this would effect Wlit’s Rebounds also, but then you’d have to look at stuff like rebound rate. He was already a FG% beast, you limit his minutes he goes harder for those minutes. He gets better shots, because everyone is getting better shots and he’s the best at it. He played one way for 48 minutes, if he’s on board with 38 MPG he’d play different… or as Marlo would say “The other way”…

2. You have to look at the gap between Wilt and other players of his own era. How dominant was he?

3. His minutes played is an enormous argument in his favor… Somebody would be like, “See!! Anthony Davis’ adjusted per 36 is better than And I’d be like bruh… a players best “ability” is availability.

I like the video but consider these factors. 1 Scoring time in games you normally score more when you are fresh vs end of the game and adjustments are made to stop you. Meaning I get 40 the last 10 gonna be Lil harder in the 4th quarter n the defense is focused on me. 2 quality of centers in the game today size height and weight they are small today more like 4s. 3 the softness of today nba defense has no power at all compared to any other time in history. Wilts time he got offensive fouls on fadeaways look at the video of why wilt couldn't dominate like shaq by the rules of the game.4 imagine the Greek freak 50 lbs heavier only scores in the paint can jump higher more stamina durability n has a competitive nature of a michael Jordan. 5 his physical abilities touching top of back board on to steps lifting at least more than Charles Barkley n Charles out lifted shaq. Jus as fast as lebron hands bigger than Jordan dr. J etc he's a created player n would score more today than then

Cool how did you come up with that adjusted number? Divide then subtract?

at the absolute least he'd be an all star on the fact that i think he's the greatest athlete in nba history

Wilt chamberlain have 4 of the top 5 ppg years of all time. He have number 1, 2, 3, and 4. 5 spot is taken by MJ, and the 6 is Wilt again.

I 💯 agreed with you, but you just have to marvel at the fact that he average over 40 PPG twice when nobody have ever average over 38.

He would score more today with the 3 pointers with the rules softened and the players weaker, he said he would average 70-80 points per game.

I dont like the stats per 36 minutes played since they are not very accurate, i say this because a player's efficiency and workrate will drop out a lot if they play more 10 or 12 minutes. The opposite will also happen, if Wilt played 36 minutes instead of 48, his efficiency would be much better, which means that the stats per 36 minutes played are not correct. If Wilt played today he would obviously not play as much( he would certainly lead the league in mpg) and his rebounds would be the most affected because of a variety of reasons, but i think its fair to assume he would put similar or better numbers than shaq because he is as strong, taller( wilt is 7'1 barefoot, shaq is 7'1 with shoes on), faster, much better vertical, overall a better athlete.

Guys a beast and a legend no doubt, but when people say he’s the Goat ? I don’t think so.

Imagine him with peds wow it wouldn't be 100 points a game it would be a hundred rebounds

So slower pace means he would play less minutes? I would think slower pace he would average the same amount of mpg.

Wilt would have just smiled and said, me in my prime against, MJ, LeBron, in their prime, how much would you bet?

You cannot possible have access to all the stats to change a great player from one era to a poorer one in the modern area!

The wilt era refused to countenance showboating, great basketball yes, but not showboating, it made for a very physical style of fast and furious basketball, with physical skills just as important as basketball skills, a elbow to the face being just as important as a good block in some cases!

Wilt suffered all that through his career and some say more because of his dominance.

Later in future era's the process changed and basketball became less physical and more controlled protecting the attacking teams and not allowing so much intimidating basketball, wilt was a finesse basketball player he had many skills, to win with, but rarely used his massive physical advantages.

But its arguably Wilt Chamberlain very seldom used his sheer size and strength to dominate with as modern players do within the modern nba rules did!

Add those facts to his domination of his era in the past to the present and a Wilt Chamberlain allowed to be physical in the modern era with his varity of shooting skills would be a force to be reckoned with!

Wilt Chamberlain three times through his career adapted his playing style long term, what makes people think he couldn't have adapted his massive physical presence to the modern era and shocked them with his dominance!

Does not add up as league leaders are doing better than his adjusted stats today. Style of play has to factor in. Eye test it. Top 5 player of his era with all time great athleticism. He’s be an all star at least most years even if not nearly as dominant.

What's to.adjust?Don't take away from what he did.Does any current player bench press 500lbs?Did any player play without fouling out?He played 6yrs less than Jabbar, but had more rebounds, his speed, endurance, jumping ability, led the league in assists, blocked the sky hook(Jabbar)twice on.one possession. When he played Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt was on downside of his career. He was 10yrs older than Abdul-Jabbar when they played against each other
