to all the people asking if he is a orthodontist or dentist, he is. He is both. He also does neurosurgery. He was my doctor and he saved my life 10/10.

They put in permanent retainers so that you can’t take them out, double it, and give it to the next person.

As a practicing dentist: there’s a point at which fixed retainers lose their useful life and become a burden. There’s a salivary duct that opens up right behind the lower front teeth under the tongue. Plaque and saliva (when combined) create something called biofilm. If not removed with floss and a toothbrush, it hardens and tartar forms (calculus). The only way you can Remove tartar is with sharp instruments when you get your teeth cleaned. No amount of flossing is going to remove tartar (unless it’s very. Very early/soft tartar). Add in a fixed retainer and it makes it more difficult to clean that area. Now you have a situation that’s way more difficult to clean than it is without a fix retainer. I tell patients at some point in their 20s it’s time to remove the fixed retainer to prevent further periodontal (gum and bone) issues (and potential tooth loss).

See you want the permanent retainer, that’s where the bastio is.

I’ve had my permanent retainers in for like 10 years now. We’ll, the top one broke a few years in and my front tooth gap resurfaced, but I have grown to like it & never got it fixed. I did get the top retainer removed after it broke. The bottom one is still there. As long as you’re seeing a dentist twice a year, it shouldn’t really cause issues. It’s hard to floss there but I am prone to cavities & still haven’t had problems with it. I just consider it part of my mouth forever now lol. It’s honestly impressive how long this bottom one has lasted. I figured it’d give out at some point.

I grew up middle class and got orthodontics. Now I'm a working class adult who's only sporadically on shitty health insurance. One of my permanent retainers came unglued after about 12 years, took me three months to save up for an appointment to have them removed. Turned out that they didn't want to also remove the cement at the same appointment, so now the back of my teeth are just covered in cement until I can afford to get another off-insurance cleaning to have it all removed, which I imagine is going to suck massively. Wish you could get a discount on anesthesia if you brought your own drugs. "I'm just gonna eat some bars and toot this horse tranquilizer real quick before you get started, don't worry about it, just make sure I'm breathing thanks :)"

The funniest thing about this ordeal is the look on the receptionist's faces when I talk about this scenario. Yeah, I know being poor is gross and icky. Please try to hide your disgust reaction a little better because one of these days someone who isn't me is gonna do a lil domestic terrorism and y'all will have had it coming.

I still recommend the regular clear retainer. With the “permanent” retainer, it can cause bad build up over time and plaque. You won’t even be able to floss between teeth either because of it. And it’s break able, nothing is really permanent! :)
