'Question of an arms race' around China's hypersonic missiles
Показать описание
China has joined the race for new long-range missiles, which are harder to detect and intercept, but the weapons test appears to have missed its target.
Perth USAsia Centre CEO Gordon Flake says the international arms community is considering this to be “another Sputnik moment”.
“Not necessarily because of fancy words like hypersonic … this is a missile that could circumnavigate the globe in subspace and then could glide in a different approach at speeds that could exceed the speed of sound,” he told Sky News Australia.
Mr Flake said the hypersonic missiles were significantly slower than ballistic missiles, but because they can change trajectory and approach from all angles, it makes them more of a threat.
“It’s the question of an arms race, right, and if you’re looking at this from an arms control perspective, it’s certainly not a good thing,” he said.
Mr Flake said countries like the United States, Russia, and China should “get serious” about the capabilities of these weapons so as to not “slip back into a full on Cold War”.
