WHY RETAILERS ARE ABANDONING SELF-CHECKOUT

I hate self checkout. I already have a job.

Dollar General got rid of there's. It made sense as the workers are often working somewhere else in the store and seems easy for thieves to pretend they paid and just go.

I prefer check out myself. I have no interest in chatting with a cashier. I just want to buy what I need and leave.

Using self-checkout makes me an employee of said store. I've never seen an employee discount appear on the checkout screen. Therefore, I never use self-checkout.

The real issue is people stealing not self checkout.

Self checkout is so annoying, I hate it. Also it took a lot of jobs from people. I say bring the workers back!

I never use these as it shifts liability from the store to myself when checking out. I don't care how long the line is, I don't want that liability.

here is the thing.... self checkout has nothing to do with customers, it is a strictly numbers decision.... let's say installing self checkout lets you get rid of 4 cashiers and keep only 2 (out of 6 you used to have at any given time)... you multiply what the employee costs (their labor is 18 per hour plus the benefits they cost you, etc, etc... maybe 30 per hour per employee is your total cost, so it's 240 per day times 4 employees you've cut, almost 1, 000 of cost is saved).... if you are losing less than 1, 000 per day to theft it's worth it to get self check out... but the way stealing works is that it always ramps up over time, right?... you got away with it you steal more next time, you tell your friends, they take a "free" item now too, etc.

400$ loss per day to stealing becomes 1400 very quickly and starts becoming more expensive to the store than the cost of those employees ringing up stuff correctly

eventually they all go back to no self check out.... now this could works in BETTER societies with more ethical people.... but not here, not in the US... i would imagine it work in the nicer countries in europe and MAYBE some asian countries (big maybe)...

I only use a self-checkout if I have one item. I never even consider using it when I have a cart full. I have used self-checkout a grand total of one time.

If I can't find a person in the checkout lane I make sure to cover up the camera at the top of the screen. I hate being watched and recorded. I don't mind the overheads but the camera on the screen is intrusive.

I was in Whole Foods today and the woman who was hovering over me, looking at every move. She got close to fafo. It sucked.

The worked fine when they were tried out in nice white, surburban neighborhoods but then they put them in cities

I don't know why people are so opposed to self checkout. I like it. I use it a lot and I am much quicker than the average checkout person. And have you seen the cashiers at some WAL-MART stores? Why would you want to deal with those folks?

Self checkouts work in good areas (red sates outside the blue controlled cities) and do not work in bad areas in all the blue states. Come to your own conclusions about the good and the evil in this world.
