Why Spider-Man has the Best Marvel Score

* Sam Raimi's 2002 Spider-Man was ground-breaking in many respects - in approach, aesthetic, narrative and cinematography. But, for me, of the most enduring gift that the film gave us was the score, written by Danny Elfman. Elfman's music for Spider-Man contains some of the greatest themes ever composed for film, but it also plays a significant role as part of the narrative.

I'll say it ... If the Danny Elfman Spider-man Main Theme is used in No Way Home, the collective screaming in cinemas around the world will be heard from the Moon.

Post-NWH Edit: So ... anyone watched the film yet?
Because the Moon certainly heard the screaming.

For this reason, I hope the new Spider-Man movie contains some musical themes from the original trilogy. It's much more than simple nostalgia. There *is* deep meaning behind the music.

And now Elfman is back with Raimi in Multiverse of Madness, which is going to be nuts.

Beautifully put, well done. Elfman's a genius, you captured his intentions perfectly. You could just listen to his scores without knowing anything about what the movie is about, yet you'd still somehow 'feel' exactly what's being portrayed.

I don't think it's just the best Marvel score, I legit think it's the greatest superhero score of all time. John Williams' Superman theme is iconic but it doesn't invoke the same emotions that the Elfman's Spiderman theme does for me personally.

I’ve always known that the Spider-Man theme is incredible. The score for Spider-Man 2 makes me tear up every time I hear it. And it’s honestly why I think I have a hard time connecting to the new Spider-Man movies, it’s just hard to watch a Spider-Man film without this amazing music.

That's why this will always be the definitive cinematic version of Spider-Man. Such an amazing mixture of direction, acting and score to create a powerful version of the Spider-Man mythos. When I was a kid, I cheered with the music in the uplifting moment and now as an adult it's impossible to not get emotional at the slow-paced, sad parts where the music brings us such weight. I love the two first parts of this trilogy with all my heart.

I love Elfman's use of choir, he really uses it as part of the orchestra instead of just doing an occasional "ominous gothic chanting" sting. Choir is so underrated in scoring and it's weird because people seem to love it whenever it does appear (I think it's a big part of why people love Japanese game soundtracks, like Dark Souls')

That Responsibility theme is quite simply the greatest theme ever. Epic, Glorious and full of Goosebumps

How do you do it? I watched this movie so many times as a kid, don’t think it ever made me emotional, but your video has got me choking up a little. Your ability to draw out the deeper emotional content in stories and music is a gift. Also, I think it’s because seeing this reminds me how good movies used to be, how they used to be uplifting and draw on a true part of the human experience, universal truths and morals... Hollywood rarely seems to find this lately.

Thank you for sharing your appreciation for this movie, makes me want to watch it again.

5:50 is definitely the most powerful feeling in all movies 😪

I always thought that the scene in Spider-Man 3 where he wakes up in the symbiote suite for the first time was one of the greatest scenes in Spider-Man history. The music is just so raw and epic as it pans out to show Peter in the black suite. The music is powerful, and it makes us feel powerful just as the suite does the same for Peter.

It's probably worth talking about why it is that we get great scores on some occasions and not on others, and how it's not simply about the skill or talent of the composers. Temp tracking, severely reduced time, limitations on hiring musicians, and studio/director meddling all play significant roles in hampering composers and keeping audiences from hearing better scores. Elfman's work on Spider-Man, like the work from Williams or Shore or Goldsmith, is often about composer agency, a collaborative relationship with a good director, and producers and executives seeing a good score as a worthy investment in contributing to the overall quality and enjoyability of a film.

Spider-Man score was the first score that made me memorise the composer from the credits.

Music itself is already so powerful, but with visuals to compliment it, it's something extraordinary.

It's funny; having grown up with 90s Elfman scores like Batman, Darkman, and Edward Scissorhands, I initially felt underwhelmed with the Spider-Man score when that film came out. But as time passed I've come to appreciate it so much more. The Farewell theme at the end of the film is a masterpiece. At the end of the day, the heart of Spider-Man is, in fact, his heart. That's why Farewell works for me.

20 years later and people still find a way to talk about this movie. The Raimi trilogy is so damn GOOD!!!

I know that Elfman is well known - but I still feel like he is more underrated than he should be. I loved the Spiderman score instantly. And out of all his works I will go to war to say that his Batman score is the best superhero score ever written.
