the mastering of the album is far more important on sound quality than the format it’s in.

The spinning wheel is hypnotic, helps you believe that somebody is working hard for the music and that is why music sounds better on a vinyl.

The bottom line is, it's the recording. I have CD's that were cut right from the original album recordings. Nothing better.

After watching this a few days ago, I bought a copy of Let it Bleed by The Rolling Stones which was remastered into dsd for vinyl in 2003. I was extremely impressed with the audio, though unable to make a direct comparison, It was crystal clear with a wide, clear soundstage and I can say it sounds as good as I've heard on vinyl. Whether that is due to the care taken during mastering (Bob Ludwig) or by the company that did the sound restoration, the result is impressive for a 50+ year old album. I'd say DSD is the perfect source recording for vinyl and will keep my eyes out for these remasters in the future. 👍👍👍👍👍Five out of five thumbs ups.

I visited this video after the MOFI-gate.
Maybe, Vinyl from 4XDSD can be as good as origianl master tapes.

Direct from the digital master to the vinyl I doubt it! Depending ofcourse on what is recorded, the dynamics and bass wil be way too much for vinyl to handle.

This is pretty relevant to the current Mofi situation that's going on right now.

Paul keeps banging on about the very high sample rates used for DSD compared to PCM. The implication is that the higher the sample rate the better the audio quality. This is a total misunderstanding of how digital recording works and the two formats cannot be compared in this way. Unlike PCM, DSD produces stair steps in the output waveform and very high sample rates are required to make this distortion inaudible. Well recorded PCM and DSD music will be audibly indistinguishable.

Vinyl distortion and tube distortion can make music more live sounding.

I like Paul and PS Audio, and there are some interesting ideas in his answer, so this is not really a criticism of the channel, but this is the single dumbest question I think I've ever heard about audiophile tech, and that's an impressively high bar.

The only problem I have, is all the music from Octave Records I've heard so far, has a very limited audience. I guess I was expecting more.

I purchased " Say Somethin'" by Gabriel Mervine on 180 gram vinyl back in October 2021. It's a wonderful pressing. I can attest that DSD to vinyl can create a special listening experience. I was a bit surprised the album runs at 45RPM! Paul, you should be thinking about a second vinyl pressing for some of the sold out releases.

When I close my eyes while I'm listening, it sounds like John Gavin Malkovich is telling a story about records.

But but.. Vinyl is limited to the needle you are using and or how fast the needle itself can vibrate to reproduce the very high frequencies. Don’t tell me I’ll need a $5000 needle. 😑

Great answer (as always). The 'Vinyl' process does add a nice colour to sound that most people seem to like but it is a distortion. I totally agree that DSD is the ultimate way to capture audio for new recordings but once captured the DSD must not be manipulated in any way in the digital domain or those benefits disappear very quickly. (Obviously you can use lossless compression on files if needed). Do you convert to an analog signal for mixing then back to DSD for storage, I wonder ?

You are taking the stair step DSD recording and turning it into natural sine waves, producuced by the inductance in the master, and in the cartridge and stylus vibration being amplified. A true sine wave ptoduced from the analog natural source. This is a better D to A converter.

Vinyl records strike the nervous system in the way they do because the mass and the compliance of the needle and it's suspension are similar to the mass and the suspended compliance of the ossicle bones in the ear.
