My opinion as doctor putting together all the symptoms for anyone reading this comment section who might be interested:
Hearing ringing bells (aura), followed by vacant episode (impaired consciousness), eyes rolling, head turning to one side (lateralizing signs), opening and closing mouth (lip smacking), mouth foaming, grunting, then feeling tired (post-ictal phase). Muhammad showed all the pathognomic signs temporal lobe seizures.

Seizures occur when part of the brain, or the whole brain starts to firing an abnormal burst of electric signals.

There are different types of seizures depending on that part of the brain the electrical firing of signals occur, which may or may not cause you to lose consciousness. For simplicity, we can categorise them as follows:

1) Simple (focal) seizures - only affect a certain area of the brain and you remain conscious. Symptoms correlate with the part of the brain affected. Temporal lobe epilepsy is included in this category and affects the temporal lobe of the brain. Patients classically report auditory hallucinations such as ringing bells, hearing voices, feeling of deja vu, intense feelings in the stomach (Muhammad’s abdomen and chest being ripped open), and detachment from ones body.

2) Generalized seizures - the whole brain suddenly starts firing electric signals at the same time. You lose consciousness and can start jerking, foam at the mouth, go floppy, etc.


3) Complex partial (focal) seizures - the electric signals start in one area of the brain as with simple partial (focal) seizures, but then spreads all over the brain. When this occurs in temporal lobe epilepsy you get the initial warning signs (aura) that a seizure is going to come on such hearing ringing bells, then lose consciousness as the seizure spreads all over the brain. Characteristic features then include:

- motionless stare/vacant episode
- eyes rolling
- jerking movements
- grunting
- heavy breathing
- mouth foaming
- lip smacking (opening and closing mouth)
- turning head or body towards one side (lateralizing signs)

After the seizure is over, the person goes through something known as a post-ictal phase where they feel drowsy and sleepy.

The underlying cause of seizure could be epilepsy but also includes other things such as head trauma, strokes, and brain tumours.

But Muhammad also displayed cardinal features of schizophrenia before supposedly receiving revelations. These included:
1) Social withdrawal - this is classically the first symptom. He spent hours alone in a cave.
2) auditory hallucinations - classically follows social withdrawal. He heard objects talking to him. It’s not uncommon for patients to claim that they can hear God, angels, or devils speaking to them.
3) delusions - patients often claim that they are chosen by god, or chosen by an agency to fulfil a purpose e.g. prophethood, working with intelligence services to solve problems, possessing special knowledge not known to others, etc.
4) knights move thinking - jumping from one topic to the other. The Quran is replete with these examples.
4) visual hallucinations - images of heaven, hell, jinns, angels, torture, etc.

Putting these together, I believe that there are two possibilities to that would explain Muhammad’s symptoms

1) Muhammed had a benign temporal lobe tumour since childhood which gradually grew larger throughout the course of his life time. This would explain the textbook descriptions of temporal lobe seizures, the overlap with schizophrenic symptoms, and personality changes from a peaceful preacher to a hyper sexual psychopathic megalomaniac.

or

2) Muhammed suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy from a young age, which together with the childhood trauma of being an orphan plus stigmatised by society at the time led to him developing schizophrenia in adulthood.

There is NO WAY the hadith compilers would invent the insane traditions associated with Muhammad's behaviour. He definitely suffered from a mental disturbance that got worse and worse.

I have a cousin, who has epilepsy problem, everytime when he hears loud music he gets epilepsy attack. I think Muhammad had the same problem.

I knew nothing about the texts cited here when I thought that Muhammad probably hallucibated the Quran. Then I watch this vid and it basically confirms my suspicions with citations from Islam's own sources.

Abdullah, you should do an episode/discussion about the benefits to moving Muslims to Quraniyoon (Quran only). Leaving hadith but keeping Quran is easier than leaving both Quran and hadith and I feel that bringing people to Quraniyoon and reject all hadith can be a path to pacify extremist ideology.
