I was a chain smoker for 13 years and I quit overnight about 14 months ago. Best decision I ever made. Currently cancer free.

My grandmother passed from lung cancer. I’ll never forget how strong she was to put on a smile for me even when her hair was falling out and she didn’t have the strength to stand some days. She was everything to me. I’ll never forget hearing her cry because she couldn’t let me stay at her house in case she died in her sleep.

my dad quit years ago, its one of my earlier memories despite me being like 10. it meant so much to all of us and while the first few years were hell he still held on. I have a healthy relationship with him now and I wouldn't ask for anything more. I love my dad.

This made me cry

My dad isn't a smoker, but he is a big drinker and not in the best health. He drank a lot but was never really drunk (to my memory at least), but I remember him having at least 1 beer nearly every day, but normally, it was 2-3 a day. It wasn't until the last few years that his health took a turn for the worst, not from the drinking but he refused to actually try and be better and healthier no matter how much I begged him he would barely exercise, he was drinking more and eating worse until recently and after 3 years of barely walking past the corner shop he's promised that by my 20th birthday he'd try to walk 5 miles and honestly I can't think of a gift I want more.

My dad consistently smoked and drank every day of my life, he never quit, and I watched him die after my 18th birthday in the ICU. I’m so glad some people have had the chance to stop, I just wish more people would.

My mom just recently died of lung cancer, we caught it way too late. But, she almost immediately stopped smoking the moment she found out and I’ve never been more proud of her.

This actually hit hard. My father recently stopped smoking. I'm pretty sure it's been over like twenty years since he started smoking and he seems so healthy and happy now. He also quit drinking caffeine and he feels more energetic. He's told me about it, and I just feel so proud. Because ever since I was born, he would smoke and to me, it just became a routine. I wouldn't even try to stop him. I'm hopeful that nothing like this happens in the future, but I can say that I really did relate.I have always had the fear of my father getting an illness because of his smoking addiction, but now I feel less worried because he actually seems like he won't go back to smoking.

My dad was a smoker. He quit when he got cancer, at least I think he did. He won’t walk me down the aisle or even be there for my high school graduation. Won’t help me move in my new house. Won’t take care of his grandkids. Won’t hold my hand. Won’t buy me food when I’m crying. Won’t stay up when I’m sick. Won’t smile when I tell a joke. Won’t be there to teach me to cook. Won’t be there when I get my first job. Won’t be there to tell me relationship advice. Won’t teach me how to drive. Won’t buy me my first car. Won’t sing me happy birthday. Won’t love me again. 03/30/23❤🪦🪽🪽

Please don’t let your family lose you to an addiction. ❤

my dad is a smoker and hes surprisingly healthy…i see him smoke mutliple times a day, before meals, after meals, after sleeping, in the morning, in the night, before bed, before driving, after driving, taking stops to smoke durring long car rides, etc. its concerning, hes been smoking since he was in high school im pretty sure. i tried to get him to quit when i was younger, before, durring, and after covid..i kinda just gave up, hes still smoking but atleast hes healthy for the most part.

My mum quit smoking two months ago because she had a 5-bypass heart surgery. She stopped less than 24 hours before the surgery, but still hasnt picked it up. Doesnt sound like much, but she is 50 and has been a chain smoker since she was a child, and in all my memories of her I imagine the smoke in her hand. Hasn’t been easy for anyone in the family, and it didnt help she had post surgery mental complications, but we’re back on track as much as we can be and i couldn’t be prouder of her progress.

It really does help seeing all the other children of major ex smokers in the comments here, and at the low points this makes me feel more understood and less alone in particular experiences
