I told my brother that if he beat cancer, we’d quit together. Even though he didn’t keep his end of the bargain, I quit. Just to be an asshole to him

Well done. I was in that same boat. I started at 12-13 and smoked nearly 2 packs a day at my worst. Took 2 months to get back to normal without it

My mom was the type of person who had an ashtray in every room and a cigarette waiting for her. My dad was diabetic but stil loved his sweets. Mom coughed like she was going to lose a whole lung so dad bet her she couldn't quit. She bet him she would quit before he would quit eating junk. She quit that day and never took another puff. The same could not be said for my dad. Happy Heavenly Birthday, Dad!

When someone stops smoking their likelihood of COPD, emphazima, lung cancer, and throat cancer drops to levels nearly as low as someone that never smoked. Its never too late to save your life

It’s stories like this that keep me from trying it even on a horrible day

When I quit smoking after almost eight years I coughed up quite some "residue" for a while as well. Which is pretty normal. Basically just tar that built up and loosens after a while of not adding more.

I started at 9 ( which sounds weird but was perfectly normal where I grew up, plus both parents chain smoked all day and night and never considered cracking a window, so the transition to smoker just came naturally) and I was able to switch to vapes ( which I know isn't perfect but it's a step in the right direction for me) and the two things I've noticed the most are 1 the smell and taste of cigarettes absolutely disgusts me now! And 2 when I smoked no matter how much I washed my body and brushed my teeth, used mouthwash I had this gross I can't get clean I always feel dirty feeling! I think it might have come from the film it puts on your tounge and throat or something. I'm so grateful to not have it anymore!!

I realized I was getting addicted during my senior year of high school. I was 18 so it’s wasn’t illegal or anything. But I started smoking just before the school year started (my birthday was just after the cutoff date to go into grade school so I was a year older than most of my classmates). I was sitting in English class with a wicked headache and I audibly said to one of my friends “man I could use a smoke.” The moment they looked at me and then back to their work like I had just said something they’d expect from me was the moment I realized how often I smoked at that point. (3-5 black and mild a day) At lunch the same day I told my friends I was quitting and they stared at me for a solid minute before my best friend wrap his arm around my shoulder and said good for you man.

Most of my friends were patient with me but I definitely lost a few because of how irritated I got whenever I got withdrawals.

I’m 26 now I’ve haven’t had a smoke since.

I use more spices since quitting smoking than I did before. Could actually taste things and realized they could taste better. I only had one cigarette after quitting and that was when I lost my poodle, my precious boy, suddenly. I bummed a cigarette from a friend that hurried to the hospital to say buy to Remi, too. Got through half the cigarette and tossed it. Haven't had one since, nor craved one.

Honestly i prayed to God. One of my only real meaningful prayers. I stopped cold turkey and had no symptoms other than the coughing

That is so true. I used to smoke 2 or 3 back to back every 30 to 40 minutes or even more often. I smoked for 6 years starting at my sophomore year at university - bad influence of friends- while other people said how much they hated smoking and how they wanted to quit, I said nothing because the truth is I loved smoking. I loved smoking while I walked, in the rain, on my breaks, with coffee, while I read a book, while I cooked, while ı drank, with friends, on car rides, late summer nights, after quality time with my bf, after cleaning, after shower… Any activity was better with a cigarette.

I never set dates to quit smoking because I had no intention to. But when I went up the stairs or a steep hill which was a common sight in the city I lived back then, while I ran and whatever else, I was struggling and I was ashamed of this struggle. My boyrfiend also had proposed but said he would not take the next step if I kept smoking and that was what I needed half. The other half was, I wanted to be a mother and just the thought of smoking during pregnancy and with a newborn around made me disgusted with myself and I quit on a literally random Tuesday. I lit the cigarette and then thought, before taking that puff, if I throw away the cigarette now that day would be my day 1. I threw away the cigarette and went to work. I came home and threw away my stack of cigarettes which was enough for a month and very pricy too, I love some good quality stuff.

It was not easy but I was determined. I stopped going to the places where people smoked and stopped doing the things that reminded me of cigarette. I of course struggled. The smell of cigarette would drive me crazy, I envied people who smoked and fought the demon in me that said one cigarette won’t make me start again but the truth is, it so fucking will. One puff will erase all of the efforts and I will start again and I don’t think I could quit this time. I still see smoking in my dreams, just did it tonight and I was a bit surprised to see this post.

The thing is, nothing or nobody can convince you to quit. You personally should want and take action immediately. Setting dates is allowing the addiction to convince you to continue and for the new starters, you can’t fucking quit whenever you want. It has been around 9 months since I quit and it is like I lost a piece of my personality because my friends and habits and everything revolved around that addiction and I had to put a distance between me and all of that and even lost some friends over it.

But there are good things too. I can run without too much struggle, I am married now, lol, and my conscious is a bit clearer. I have started to respect myself a bit more and now I don’t have to decide between lighting a cigarette or getting on that damn bus.

Today, 3 weeks ago I quit. I thought it was going to be hard after having a 30yr habit, but with Chantex it wasn't one bit. One of the easiest things I've ever done. The anxiety of knowing my quit date was soon approaching was the worse part. After that... Easy Peasy

I quit cold turkey seven years ago and I smoked for about 30 years despite my children nagging me and begging me to stop all it took was one trip to the hospital in four days with pneumonia and I realize I had to quit.

My mom was a two packer all my life. Until she had to have surgery. She quit, cold turkey and never looked back. So proud she was my mom.
