Sumo Wrestlers are NOT Fat #Shorts

●The Surprising Reason Why Samurai Trained in Sumo

The average weight of a sumo wrestler is about 166 kg, with some of the heaviest weighing nearly 230 kg.

In general, fighters try to lose weight, but why do sumo wrestlers choose to get fat?

To make long stories short, it is because “weight is a great weapon.” Unlike other martial arts, sumo has no class system, so not having weight will be a major disadvantage.

However, many people misunderstand that sumo wrestlers are JUST fat.

The average body fat percentage of sumo wrestlers is said to be about 24% which is below the average for regular Japanese men. In other words, the fat is only on the outside of the body and it hides their strong muscles underneath gained through extreme training.

Also, just simply gaining weight will not make you stronger. The top sumo wrestlers, known as 横綱 yokozuna, are often below the average weight, and some of them use their short height as a weapon. Gaining too much weight can lead to knee injuries and other problems, so it is necessary to find the right body size for each individual.

The first time I watched sumo, I was so blown away with how agile and flexible they are, and not to mention very strong. If you watch them compete, you can see they are not just fat, but very athletic!

Sumo wrestling deserves so much more recognition, they're one of the most dedicated athletes, with a deep culture too

More people need to realize that training in Sumo is extremely difficult, and the matches themselves are extremely painful.

A common misconception is that sumo wrestlers eat lots of junk food when in reality many sumo wrestlers have some pretty healthy diets and routines to help them gain and maintain their weight while also staying healthy

So basically, that flesh is their armor and is hiding 6 pack abs?

"Hiding the strong muscles underneath" very immediately evident too if you ever watch even just a couple minutes of sumo. I would not want one of those guys to use that unique slap.

Great video as always

I’ve always wondered about this trope! The strategy and dedication sumo training must take is really impressive.

I remember a documentary some twenty years ago, about a fledgling sumo wrestler's daily routine and the strict hierarchy and rules within their dôjo. It was impressive to see this fifteen year old kid toss around a tree trunk that probably weighed half as much as a mini cooper^^

Just imagine how the muscles would look if they got shredded.
