4:23 The minimum wage in Canada varies from by province/territory.
It’s only $11.90/hr in Manitoba but other provinces are higher.
Update: as of 2024-10-22 it is now increased to $15.80 in Manitoba.

Canada is cheaper for buying houses? No it isn't, housing is way the hell overpriced in Canada.

With Regards to Guns in Canada, Canada has a licensing system. This means you have to apply for a license. There are two classes of licenses you can apply for and each have their own restrictions. For Example, Restricted Guns can only be used at a Gun range and you need the authorization to take them there. Where as Non-Restricted guns can be used on private or public land (depending on local laws).

There are approximately 2.1 Million licensed gun owners in Canada.

Health care is not free in Canada. We pay for health care, hence the high taxes. We just don’t pay for medical expenses upfront.

In the US, there are 2 types of minimum wage (MW). Official Federal MW for most workers is $7.25 and hasn't changed since the 1990s. However, each state can set its own higher minimum wage, and virtually all have done so. Most states are now officially in the $10-$12 range. Market conditions and inflation have pushed that even higher. In my state (Massachusetts, Boston suburbs), if you aren't paying at least $15, you don't get anyone applying.

There is a separate, lower minimum wage for people who are generally tipped, like waitstaff. The MW there is only $2.13. However, the employer is required to pay more than that if the server's tips plus the $2.13 don't come up to MW. In other words, waitstaff still get at least the regular local MW, but through a combination of tips and wages.

So, my family is from both the US and Canada. I hate US/Canada comparisons because they can never really be objective. In reality, the answers to this question are really complex and varied. It’s not black and white. Not to mention the fact that any comparison is also complicated by the reality that the US has such a significantly larger footprint than Canada. Its kind of like trying to meaningfully compare Toronto to Vaughan. It’s tough. Also, consider the responding demographic; the most likely people to respond to this topic are 1) Canadians, 2) foreigners who are thinking of trying to migrate to Canada, and thus already have a rosy view of the country, and 3) a small number of Americans who are likely already predisposed to examine their country negatively in any comparison. Neither country is perfect, but they are both great countries, and are both great and diverse peoples. I leave it at that. Both can be great without being at the expense of the other. It’s not zero sum. Whichever one can be considered “better” depends on the individual making the consideration based on their own circumstances.

Excellent video. In my opinion for PR Canada is preferred and for jobs, the US is the best.

Note to Yulia: This is the only video of yours I've seen so I apologize if any of the below notes were adressed in other videos

Note to other readers: These comments are in order and by coincidence the first few are pretty pro-canada but they aren't all that way so please read the whole thing is you can.

These facts/opinions are based on my life in Ontario so its possible some of my staments might not aply in other provinces (especially Quebec since they have alot of special laws and Alberta since they have a large Patriot population...American Patriots...for some reason!?!)

Education: Two Problems 1) We definitely have programs to cover schooling whether its college or university, the only reason I have school loans is cause I was a dumb kid and forgot to apply for the grant for my second semester oherwise it would have been free, even covering my rent, food and even "recreation", 2) School in general is WAY cheaper in Canada, we also have way more "Public" college/universities than the US, their governments seems to love privatizing things

Immigration: Your definition of "problem" is odd, Canada's immigration is WAY more flexible that the US (although still stricter than alot of other countries) and thats a "Problem?", um...ok. Don;t get why the US is so anti-immigrant anyway...unless your a Native American (whos family never left) YOUR FAMILY IMMIGRANTED...not to mention this ""Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore."

Pay: Yeah the whole lower minimum wage in places where tips are expected is dumb, tips in general is a messed up system, before prohibition in the US/Canada it was seen as rude/tacky to "tip" (aka bribe) everyone got treated equally (assuming you could afford to eat at a restaurant) but prohibition killed restaurant profits so instead of the restaurant owners taking the hit they slashed workers wages (cause yay capitalism) so servers, etc. had to start taking those "tips" (again aka bribes), than because capitalism the practice stuck around despite prohibition being removed. Now its expected and seen as rude/tacky to NOT tip regardless of service.

Pay 2: I'd argue Covid changed this greatly, now alot of jobs have just stuck with remote working (or switched to automation, which is why UBI needs to happen) so you can work in a place thats cheaper to live whilst getting wages from a company that pays more and since you specifically called out IT jobs thats the most common job to work from home, only tradition has IT people working in an office now. Oh you also mentioned buying houses, yeah no, I don't know how it is in the US but in Canada the Housing Market is completely shot, less and less people can afford to buy a house nowadays. Even my brother who is a really high end IT guy (i'm a "wage slave") is going have trouble getting a house.

Cost of Stuff: Yeah even with paying "duties" its almost always cheaper to ship something (or just walk across the border, have a look at Canadas population map roughly 50% of us live on or near the border...often referred to as the "Golden Horseshoe"...not sure why) from the US than to buy it here. IIRC it has something to do with Canada being primarily a "Raw resource" economy so we sell the US (and other countries) our "Raw resources" than use that to buy "Finished Products" which isn't in our best interest but unlike China (yeah i know BOO communists but we rely on their products) or the US we don't have the Population or Infrastruture to manufacture stuff (ie. Not sure if we eventually sorted this out but at first we had to buy Covid vaccines from other people cause we didn't have the facilities and/or equipment to do so ourselves)

Health Care: Canadian health care has gotten worse in alot of ways over time for example you mentioned "dental work" if your over the age of 18 health care only pays for extractions even fillings are considered "cosmetic" than eventually if you lose enough teeth they'll cover dentures, it has GREATLY improved mental health coverage even though its still socially not treated as seriously as physical health

Taxes: Uhhh...taxes are good, its how social programs function, no taxes = no health care, no roap repairs, no public scholl etc. don't get me wrong getting taxed on your income than taxed again on buying things and even taxed when you gift someone something is REALLY harsh but i'd rather that than lose health care.

Guns: Whilst guns are not allowed in certain states they have little to no power to stop people from bringing weapons from other states where it is legal.

Guns 2: Americans trying to bring guns into canada to hunt or w/e on those border patrol shows is quite funny, completely different cultures just clashing. (I'm anti-gun but I feel for the Americans that make this mistake since they have no reason to think twice about it, its as normal as seat belts to them)

Weed: I'm very much "Do want you want unless your hurting others" aka "Your right to swing your fist stops at my nose" so toke away my friends, I'm unfortunately allergic to weed (and Trees and grass etc.) so I can't partake so please not by me. (Note: YES smoker whether your vaping, cigarettes, weed or cigars blowing the cloud in peoples face IS hurting them and should not be as "normal" as people treat it)

Language: Fun fact the only place in Canada that is officially Bilingual is New Brunswick, Quebec only has French as an official language, that said alot of products ARE required by law to be in both French and English so have to be modified from the US version when sold here (The Most obvious examples are physical copies of Movies, Music and Video Games). If you ask Karens the official Languages of our two countries are Canadian and American (or Quebecois in Quebec), also note that Quebec french is NOT paris french, its VERY different.

Metric Vs. Imperial: Yeah this sucks hard, math is hard enough but canadians have to learn both and its so bloody confusing, this is partly due to what I mentioned in the "Cost of Stuff" section alot of our "stuff" comes from the US and it default to or is only in Metric...ie. we measure wood we cut down in Imperial units than sell it to the US (who we have to tell it to in Metric) and than they sell us a bed frame back but its all measured in Metric

People: Pretty much agreed but I will say one of our "stereotypes" is pretty well earned...In 2009, an act was passed in Canada which made apologies inadmissible in court. So, saying “sorry” meant “an expression of sympathy or regret” not “an admission of fault or liability in connection with the matter to which the words or actions relate.”

Living in Canada is more money then US. In Canada you buy a house for almost million dollars in the US you can buy that same house in Canada for 350, 000 to 400, 000

Houses in Canada are more expensive than in the United States. Canada has decided to limit home construction to keep the home prices inflated so their housing market doesn't crash.
