Famous Guitar Players Who Started Late

These are some famous guitar players who started late. There’s a misconception that learning guitar late in life is harder to do. It’s more difficult in the sense that life is busier and responsibilities are greater, so making time for it takes more intentionality. However, you will not somehow have a limitation on how well you will be able to play based solely on your age.

I have been told about some others but haven't checked them out. Glenn Tipton, Tom Scholz, Jesse Hughes, Tal Farlow, Greg Ginn, and Chris Rea.

I was always envious of the guys who learned to play when we were at school, but never did anything about it. So I’ve started during lockdown. Hoping to join an Open Mike night in one of our local pubs within a few years. Just hit 63 so hoping to do so before my 65th!

37 years old, started last year and am addicted! The first time I was able to sing while strumming was like Christmas, and got me hooked!

Since I'm 19 years old and just found my love for guitars...the first entry really made me happy and gave me hooe because every guitarist I know started at 15 or 16

I'm 26 and I'm practicing like crazy trying to catch up to those who started as a child. Someday I hope to be in a video like this lmao

I began playing 1 year ago when I retired at 65. I was most inspired by another YouTuber named Lauren Bateman. She said if you improve 1% a week, at the end of a year you will be 52% better than when you started. I believe she is right. If I can improve another 52% in the next year I might just turn out to be a halfway decent guitar player. Keep practicing. You will get better.

Started playing when I was 19, but not seriuosly because of University, so I quit at 23 and never touched a guitar for 20 years. Then I started seriuosly at 45, now I an 48 and I play 3 hours per day. During pandemic lockdown 6 or 8 hours per day. With exercise my fingers are much more quick and precise now then when I was 20 but playing only 20 minutes per day. Now I am attending a professional course in a real school not online, because it is fundamental that your teachers listen to you. Cheers and rock on.

I played a little in school band as a kid. Then decided to buy a guitar to relax when I was 59. It’s fun and I practice about an hour per day.

The biggest mental block for me has been my age since I’m almost 55, having started guitar 2 years ago. I hit a plateau about 6 months ago, and laid it down. Just started back a week ago. Thanks for the “never too old” reminder! Just what I needed to hear!🤟✌️

I'm 49. Picked up the guitar last year. Still suck at it. Apparently, there is hope :)

I tried learning the acoustic guitar when I was 22. Gave up shortly after. Tried again when I was 25. Gave up again after a couple of months. I'm trying it again. Next month will be my 26th birthday. I want a Stevie Ray Vaughan Series Stratocaster and a silver and black Stratocaster. Fingers crossed for better luck this time! 🤞

Yes age is just a number, I still run, ride my bike, between 50-100 miles a week, and I'm at about the same stage as you with the guitar, I'm 67 :)

This is awesome I’m 40 and just started learning guitar during the COVID quarantine 9 months ago. I practice every day sometimes for 30 minutes sometimes for hours.

Always an inspiration no matter, what your age. This decade is when I'm really going to go for it

One thing I wish I could go back and change is playing instruments. I played guitar at age 10 and drums a bit at 13. Now I’m picking up the guitar again at age 20 and feel like I’m learning to use my hands again

So...you mean there’s hope for us old guys? 😂 Seriously, this is what I needed to hear ... I love that I found guitar .. it’s given me a new focus after a very tough year. Thank you again for your posts. 🤘🎸🙂

Bought a used stratocaster last week. It's not my first guitar, but my stepdad destroyed my first guitar when I was a kid before I was able to learn much. I just turned 39. Excited to start learning!
