It's time to DeGoogle your phone and take back some of your privacy. CalyxOS contains features and options not found in most mobile device manufacturers' official firmware. Included are phone dialer interaction with encrypted calling apps like Signal and WhatsApp, Tor integration, and free VPN services provided by The Calyx Institute and other non-profits like Riseup. DuckDuckGo is the primary search engine, and DuckDuckGo's Android browser is the default web browser in CalyxOS. MicroG is also included in CalyxOS as a privacy-enhancing substitute for some of the Google Play Services features. CalyxOS has also led the development of SeedVault an encrypted backup and restore application for integration into Android based Operating systems and which has been adopted in LineageOS, GrapheneOS, and others.

SeedVault, an encrypted backup and restoration solution for Android-based operating systems that has been used by LineageOS, GrapheneOS, and others, was also developed by CalyxOS.

By default, the operating system strives to maintain the Android security model, taking full advantage of Android's Verified Boot system of cryptographic signature and running with a closed boot loader. Apple has recently been in the news for spying on it's users, installing CalyxOS will help you reclaim some privacy in the digital world.

With five years of security upgrades and the most layers of hardware security, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are the most secure Pixel phones yet. The Google Tensor system on a chip (SoC) hardware and new Pixel-first features in the Android operating system combine to make this the first Pixel phone with Google security from the silicon to the data center. Pixel's security has also been proven through transparency and external certification by multiple dedicated security teams.

With Google Tensor, Google has put user data protection and transparency at the forefront of hardware security. The main processors in Google Tensor are Arm-based and use TrustZone technology. TrustZone is an important aspect of the security architecture for general safe processing, but Google Tensor includes security enhancements that go beyond TrustZone.

The Google Tensor security core is a custom-built security subsystem focused to user privacy protection. It has a specialized CPU, ROM, one-time-programmable (OTP) memory, crypto engine, internal SRAM, and protected DRAM, and is not just logically but physically independent from the application processor. The security core's principal use cases for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro include securing user data keys at runtime, hardening secure boot, and interacting with Titan M2.

Secure hardware is only as secure as the operating system it runs on, and the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro run on Trusty, an open source trusted execution environment. The safe OS utilized in TrustZone and the Google Tensor security core is Trusty OS.

The new Titan M2, a distinct security chip conceived and developed entirely by Google, is included with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The Pixel now features an in-house created RISC-V processor with increased speed and memory, making it even more resistant to advanced attacks with this next-generation device. An independent, accredited evaluation lab has assessed Titan M2TM to the most stringent vulnerability assessment standard, AVA VAN.5.

Terrific tutorial. I've been using Graphene for a few days and I'm starting to get a bit frustrated with some of the limitations. I used your Graphene tutorial which was a big help so I'll give this a try in the next few days. Thanks :-)

This was a fantastic tutorial, however I’m stuck and need help. I got all the way to timestamp 10:27 and when I clicked to lock the boot loader, I see boot slot b, not a like you show here. At that point, I either clicked start or just waited (can’t remember which) and a little funny icon appeared and I ended up in a vicious circle of fastbootd menus and nothing working. I figured I nearly bricked my daughters new pixel 4a, so I spent the next hour fumbling through getting google OS back on. It’s working now, but I would LOVE to attempt to get Caylx to work. I can’t figure out where I went wrong…followed this exactly. Any help is appreciated!

Hi @side of burritos I just downloaded CalyxOS (thanks for the video!) and was wondering if you might be able to tell me the consequences of logging into YouTube though a browser using a VPN. If I close the browser and delete cookies afterwards, am I still compromising my privacy? This is one of my big unanswered questions using this OS. I am enjoying it but I would still like to use YouTube, IG, and FB if there’s any safe way to do so. Any help would be very helpful! Thank you!

What would you suggest to me switching from iOS and still needing some Google for convenience and probably some Apps? Calyxos with microG or GrapheneOS with Google Services?

Is personal data stored on the Google Tensor SoC processor?

I went with the 6. Quick question. Is this as privacy and security centric as graphene? Or will it still leave you open to tracking, etc. based on it using MicroG

@Side of Burritos, total fail here. Brand new Pixel 6. First the screen went black and had just a battery icon with a lightning bolt in it, wouldn't turn on or off. Pressed the power button for 30 seconds and got the boot screen again telling me my device is corrupt, told it to first pause then resume, then it loaded the Google screen, and now it's been stuck on that for 5 minutes. Nothing happening. Won't turn on or off. What's going on? Can you help? Or where do I get help?

Thank you! I have a graphene oS pixel 3 which did have wifi/volte calling but is no longer supported. I am looking to buy a pixel 6 w Calyx to use on Verizon network in USA. Verizon says that model supports wifi-calling. Is there any reason to suspect the phone will not work. It was not bought from Verizon. ( just cant get stuck w another bum phone out here in the woods)- Thanks for this tutorial

Does the voice typing on the tensor chip still work the same? I'm assuming that it does, but the main reason I want the pixel 6 is for the voice typing accuracy and speed.

Tried several times to install on Pixel 7 with M1 MacBook Pro. Kept getting stuck on step 5. Bootloader screen menu won't change to the one that allows me to unlock it. I'm certain I've done everything right to this point. Any thoughts?

2:34 I failed. I bought a Verizon believing it was the OEM unlocked. Lost $450 as a result. I'm a loser.
