Only used them once. They advertised it was free by the time I was done, I had a hefty bill. It's only free for simple returns which, if you know simple math, you can easily do yourself.

I agree that some of their advertising claiming free filing is misleading (they charge for filing state returns) but I've used TurboTax for years and love the program. One year, I also used a tax accountant because there were estate issues and I needed a second opinion. The accountant pooh-poohed my TurboTax preps and was sure it was wrong. She came up with the same result...to the penny. She charged $300.

I’ve used turbo tax for years. It’s never once been anywhere near free. Easy to use, yes. Free? No.

The IRS themselves have an online list of what tax prep software will be free for you.
Not just TurboTax.
It's a widget that you enter basic info and tell you if it would even be free at all.
One can also submit a tax return directly to the IRS without a middle man.
If it's true that most of Americans do not need to pay federal income tax, then those same could probably use free software...

Don't forget the $39 fee for them to take your payment from your refund. You can pay using your bank or card for no extra cost though. I had to go back a few pages when I saw that fee and changed it to pay from my bank account instead. $40 is quite a steep fee

Other countries have this tax obligation under control. We have people available for multiple aspects of everything and they all expect to be paid. It's a requirement of being a citizen, it should be free for everyone no matter what. Our taxes system is a mess.

I’m a self-employed hairdresser and I have been using TurboTax for seven years. I always get a return. I have never owed money. TurboTax is incredibly simple and only takes me about an hour. The only thing that annoys me is that they say it’s free but then I end up paying the TurboTax filing fee for self-employment which is about $90. Aside from that I’ve never had any issues with them.

I used TurboTax for free to help a low income individual. She had one W-2. It literally took me 15 minutes to complete her return. I prepared the return on Friday and she had her refund processing on Monday. The free product is for simple returns.

Interesting. I’ve never had an issue using TurboTax. Yes, I’ve paid a fee but It’s still cheaper than what I would pay using a professional tax preparer.

It used to be free! It’s gone up in price every year but I still use it as I love it! It’s not for everyone but it works for me.

I filed totally free with TurboTax this year; both state and federal. Sure, they tried to corral me into a "suggested" fee category; but I just declined. In full disclosure, I'm a retired guy and have simple tax needs, but it was nice to run through their software and not have them charge anything.

I mean... I don't think I was ever duped that they were free. Theyve always said pretty clear, imo, that the 1040ez is free. Anything more, then there would be a charge.

From my experience, I clicked on the free tax link but as soon as I mention I have investments they upgrade me to premium which is not free. They also charge for additional forms like George said.

The fact that we need tax preparation software or an accountant to file even a basic return each year strongly suggests that our tax system is overcomplicated.

They also charge a 2.64% transaction fee (of your owed taxes) if you pay your taxes through them when you're efiling. We found that out this year. We will never use them again.

TurboTax isn’t really free but it’s still cheaper then hiring someone else to do your taxes for you. And I personally think it’s worth it to spend some money to make sure my taxes are properly done vs me trying to do them myself and messing stuff up 😭
