When you distill it, the vapor of the base fluid is collected and forms back into the alcohol. The vapor is why it was referred to as spirits...

This isn't true. They are called "spirits" because they are the captured vapors from the mash used in the distillation process. Not all alcohol is called spirits because some alcohol like beer and wine are brewed but not distilled. Also, drunkenness / alcoholism was seen as different from demon possession because a drunk person could sober up, but a deranged person would not, and poeple could relate to a drunk person having been drunk themselves, but they had a very hard time understanding schizophrenia, multiple-personality disorder, and other mind-traumas and diseases without being superstitious about it. Even the fermentation and distillation processes that makes alcohol wasn't readily understood for the vast majority of time humanity has been practicing it, because we didn't understand the basics about chemistry or know micro-organisms even existed. These things were view in the lenses of alchemy, and apothecary and magic way before it was chemistry, and neuro-science.What drunkenness is really separating you from is your higher functions, meanwhile your lizard brain takes over. And the only thing a lizard brain understands are verbs that begin with the letter F. Freezing, fleeing, fighting, and fucking because it doesn't care about social consequences. It doesn't even really care about any egotistical thing. It's just hardwired for the most primitive form of survival the someway a cell is hardwired to replicate, or self-destruct based on internal and external conditions. If you're drink too much you basically induce a form of psychopathy. You drink more, you get a form of psychosis, and you drink more, you die.

Actually it was from alchemist, and they believe alcohol or spirits had mystical properties that could turn common metals to gold, but go off I guess

I believe in a spirit world. But this sounds like something someone made up to justify their drunken mistakes. Some drugs can do this though.
