Public transport guide in Amsterdam

In this video, I run through the different types of public transport in Amsterdam and how to use them. I cover the tram, metro, ferry and bus (run by GVB) as well as the train (run by NS). In terms of tickets I talk about the GVB ticket, iamsterdam city card, OV card as well as prices and where to buy them. I also talk about OVpay which has very recently been introduced and is available on the GVB network. Finally I share a tip if you get lost on the bus or tram. Whether you are visiting or you’re moving to Amsterdam; I give you the low down on how to use the public transport here. NB I also reference Amsterdam Centraal Station quite a few times. It is a major transportation hub and is a great starting point for buying all ticket types, as well accessing all forms of public transport. Thank you for watching.

What to do in Amsterdam

ABOUT ME
Hello there! My name is Daniella Perera and I’m an artist and vlogger based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I grew up in Hong Kong and the UK, and I’m of mixed heritage including Chinese, Sri-Lankan, Dutch and Portuguese.

Near the end of 2020, I moved from Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam with my husband. I have since fallen in love with this city, and I make YouTube videos (every other weekend) about things to do in Amsterdam and tips to settle in faster. The idea behind 'Pocket Lighthouse' was to shine a light on the above topics, and for this information to be accessible on the go.

One of my long-term goals is to use my creativity (whether that be through art or video) to regularly support organisations helping strays and shelter dogs. Needless to say I absolutely adore dogs.

Hi everyone! :) Do you have any tips to share about taking public transport in Amsterdam?

I've watched soo many videos to understand this system for when we take vacation. YOUR VIDEO IS THE BEST: to the point, not a ton of extra running around video, no music so that I can clearly understand you. THANK YOU!

Nice explanation of our public transport.
What I often see going "wrong" is that visitors are not always sure where they are and then panic and try to read all the information around them. An easy option is increasingly forgotten: ask other people! There is always a Dutch person nearby who can provide information. We like to do it, even though we can come across as quite distant. ;-)

And a pro tip: in most trams you can press the button to open the doors once while driving. The light will then flash. When you arrive at the stop, the door opens automatically. You don't have to press anymore.

I am planning vacation tour to Amsterdam and this video gave a very clear picture of how and what options to choose for public transport. Thanks a lot for clear, precise and no non sense background music video. Appreciate your effort.

super useful, thank you, down to the wire, that's what I needed so we don't have to duke it out on the spot once off the plane! Thank you! The door buttons and bell is exactly the same as our system in San Francisco so totally familiar with how it works!

For visitors ❤excellent video. Main thing I think you've missed is that visitors changing beween operators like train and metro DO need to check out the first operator and after that check in to the second. A lot of people even from the Netherlands forget that.

Awesome video, very clear and to the point! 👏🏻 I’ll be visiting Amsterdam at the end of the month but staying in Haarlem and moving around from there. Which card would you recommend? I’m planning on spending 2 days tops in Amsterdam and then visit other places. Also, if I buy a 24h card do I also need to tap in and out for every ride?

This is an excellent video! Clear, concise, and full of valuable information. Do you happen to know if NS trains do not do seat reservations for domestic trips (and does this mean one can potentially sit anywhere in a wagon of the class for which they purchased their ticket)? Also NS-related, since the one-way tickets do not specify any times, is it safe to assume that one can take any train within those 24-hours in their desired direction?

Ns is not the only train company. In Amsterdam yes, if you don’t count eurostar or Thalys. But you will find other train companies in the Netherlands

Thank you for the video, it was quite informativ. I'll visit Amsterdam next week and I have a question. Does the I amsterdam city card include transport to Keukenhof? Is there an allrounder card for all the public transport (including trains)? Or should I get a ticket for the shuttle bus to Keukenhof?

Thank you for that informative video! I would like to know whether or not I need to check in and out during train transfer (when I just change the tracks and have up to 4 minutes for that)?
