"Shutdown" will never ever mean the same thing

I just wanted to say that you guys do a great job giving facts about things like this & explaining them when everyone else is too busy to take the time to do so. I have extreme difficulty understanding these issues, political ones the most, and these kinds of videos make it possible for me to get a good start on how to comprehend & research these complex issues. I would really like to see a channel dedicated to explaining neutral political & economical news from across the world in the future.

Ok so I live in the north of England. Its not perfect, I know this.  But I know many people who felt the same as me. Yes Hank, we did kinda want to laugh at your (United States) inability to agree on this. And it scared us a little, because the U.S. is very powerful, and we get a little scared when very powerful states start making playing chicken like this. I'm glad you got it sorted, kinda.

I know it's been a while since this was uploaded, but I just finished watching it in my effort to catch up to current Vlogbrothers. I'm like 2 videos off now. BUT SERIOUSLY! Canada can I move to you? I'm done with this country..

Hi Hank! Thanks for this video, just used it in my classroom. We were doing a lesson about the word "catalyst" where we examined the word in each of the subject areas via rotations around the room. Your station was a favorite; they loved your video and were able to hold an AWESOME conversation about the catalysts for the government shut down the next day! THANKS!!

Healthcare Triage is amazing! And this is its origin story!? Who knew! It cites its sources, discusses the quality of studies, and acknowledges when further research needs to be done on a topic. Everyone involved should be proud of themselves; they've created the online experience few modern health/medical classrooms can manage.

John and Hank are pretty much the only reason I fully understand what's happening in the news, they explain everything much better than any news person..

Your version may not have, but they way they are trying to run this will. It's not all run the same way. It's not all identical systems either. They can't even keep the website working, how are they going to keep the system working!

2019 anyone, I never though that I would say that on this video, the more things change the more they stay the same

I remember when this happened it was the best thing in the world because I was 13 and my online school program shutdown. Having a valid excuse to not do school was a dream come true.

Now flashforward to 2018 and this is happening again, still have to do school, unfortunately, but at least I'm a little more aware of what a government shutdown actually means.

Thank you for explaining this. Until now I was just like all "How does that even happen?!"

You are correct to say that Medicare makes up the bulk of most hospitals' funding... at least publicly run hospitals. These lower reimbursements mean that the hospitals must fund their functions via taxes, grants or higher prices (often all 3). Medicare is, in fact, rationing, and as I said, rationing leads to higher prices.

In hospitals that don't take Medicare (they exist) prices for everybody is lower, including Medicare patients. those hospitals also practice good medicine, which is rare.

It's really interesting to watch this video in 2021. Hearing him talk about the increased radicalization of districts feels so prescient after the Trump presidency and how everything is with politics today.

I work in a food production plant. The USDA has an in house field office in the plant, manned by a USDA inspector obviously Independent of the plant operators. His job is to inspect the operations throughout the day, wandering anywhere he wants, any time he wants. If he is not there, the plant shuts down, period. Lots of people out of work, lots of companies affected. He is required to come to work, yet not getting paid. What if he decides he has to get paid?

I live near DC and literally so many people I know have parents who aren't working or getting money. (yes, the shutdown is over now but I'm talking about previously) My dad who makes all the money wasn't getting paid and still had to work. The rest of the country let alone a few areas didn't quite get to see the full impact. All the museums closed, barriers around monuments, nobody was getting paid and nobody making money. It was a big deal and completely ridiculous.

The books are arranged by color and the decorations match the colors of the books they're on. For this, I adore you (or whoever arranged them).
