This is an old video now, but I recently just tried teaching my dog how to retrieve items for me, and one of those steps requires holding the items. He is also SO food driven, and the second he sees a treat he will not play. I tried to use his toys, but he refused, got annoyed, tried every other trick he knew instead. I did the same thing! I put some of his treats in the item, and he picked it up right away.
